Perian 1.2.3 released

Late Tuesday, the Perian team released version 1.2.3 of Perian, the open-source QuickTime components effort that allows QuickTime to support and play a variety of additional formats beyond what it would normally be able to handle.

The new version makes the following fixes and changes:
- AVI, FLV, and MKV file formats.

- MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivX, H.264, FLV1, FSV1, VP6, H263I, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), MPEG Layer II Audio.

- AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3.

- Subtitle support for SSA and SRT.

- Some Fraps videos only displayed black.

- Workaround checks for Front Row stopped being effective.

- Fixed compatibility with web video playback.

- Worked around System Preferences crashing during an update on 10.6.

- Further fixes to Matroska import.

Perian 1.2.3 is a 3.4 megabyte download and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

Apple releases iTunes 10.4 update

Among everything that was released and updated Wednesday, Apple also released iTunes 10.4, the latest version of its multimedia/jukebox application for Mac OS X. The new version, a 74 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- iTunes 10.4 is now designed for OS X Lion. You can now use iTunes with OS X Lion’s new Full-Screen App capability, which allows you to use iTunes and other apps without distractions. Navigate between your full-screen apps with a simple gesture.

- iTunes is now a 64-bit Cocoa application on OS X Lion and includes a number of important stability and performance improvements. Some iTunes plug-ins may no longer be compatible with this version of iTunes. Please contact the plug-in developer for an updated plug-in compatible with iTunes 10.4.

iTunes 10.4 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.

VirtualBox, an open source x86 virtualization project available for free has just hit version 4.1.0. The new version, a 82.8 megabyte download, sports the following list of fixes and changes:

- Support for cloning of VMs (bug #5853, see the manual for more information): full clones can be created through the GUI and VBoxManage, linked clones only through VBoxManage.

- GUI: enhanced wizard for creating new virtual disks.

- GUI: new wizard for copying virtual disks.

- GUI: keep the aspect ratio in scale mode (Windows and OSX hosts only; bug #7822).

- VMM: raised the memory limit for 64-bit hosts to 1TB.

- Experimental support for PCI passthrough for Linux hosts, see the manual for more information.

- Windows guests: Experimental WDDM graphics driver, supporting Windows Aero (bug #4607) and providing
- Direct3D support using a cleaner approach (no need to install the guest drivers in Safe Mode anymore).

- Guest Additions: status of modules and features can now be queried separately by the frontends.

- Networking: new network attachment mode “Generic Driver”, which offers an open plugin architecture for arbitrary and separately distributable virtual network implementations.

- Host-only Networking: fixed host crash in kernels prior to 2.6.29.

- New Networking Mode UDP Tunnel: allows to interconnect VMs running on different hosts easily and transparently, see the manual for more information.

- Experimental support for SATA hard disk hotplugging available with VBoxManage.

- Solaris hosts: New Crossbow based bridged networking driver for Solaris 11 build 159 and above.

VirtualBox 4.1.0 is available for free and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and an Intel-based Mac to install and run.

SpamSieve updated to 2.8.6

Michael Tsai’s must-have shareware program, SpamSieve, has just been updated to version 2.8.6. The new version, an 8.3 megabyte download, makes the following fixes and improvements:

- Made various changes to improve SpamSieve’s filtering accuracy.

- Improved compatibility with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

- Added support for Postbox 2.5.

- Updated the Setting Up MailMate instructions for the new preferences in MailMate 1.1.2.

- Updated the Setting Up Outlook instructions for Microsoft Office 2011 Service Pack 1.

- Updated the Setting Up Postbox instructions to ensure that messages that you train as spam are moved to the junk mailbox or trash.

- Worked around a rare OS/hardware condition that could prevent SpamSieve from launching.

- The Apple Mail plug-in is better at reporting errors when it’s unable to fully load itself.

- Made various other clarifications to the manual.

- Adjusted the help page titles to fit better in the menu and search results.

SpamSieve is available for a US$30 registration fee and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run. The new version can either be downloaded directly from the web site or brought up to the current version via the program’s built-in update feature.

VirtualBox, an open source x86 virtualization project available for free has just hit version 4.0.10. The new version, a 82.8 megabyte download, sports the following list of fixes and changes:

- GUI: fixed disappearing settings widgets on KDE hosts (bug #6809).

- Storage: fixed hang under rare circumstances with flat VMDK images.

- Storage: a saved VM could not be restored under certain circumstances after the host kernel was updated (bug #8983).

- Storage: refuse to create a medium with an invalid variant (for example Split2G with VDI; bug #7227).

- Snapshots: none of the hard disk attachments must be attached to another VM in normal mode when creating a snapshot.

- USB: fixed occasional VM hangs with SMP guests (bug #4580).

- USB: proper device detection on RHEL/OEL/CentOS 5 guests (partial fix for bug #8978).

- ACPI: force the ACPI timer to return monotonic values for improve behavior with SMP Linux guests (bug #8511 and others).

- RDP: fixed screen corruption under rare circumstances (bug #8977).

- rdesktop-vrdp: updated to version 1.7.0.

- OVF: under rare circumstances some data at the end of a VMDK file was not written during export.

- Lion fixes (bug #8903).

- GNOME 3 fix.

Microsoft releases 14.1.2 update for Office 2011, 12.3.0 update for Office 2008

On Monday afternoon, Microsoft released version 14.1.2 of its popular Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac suite. The update, a 109 megabyte download, can also be located, snagged and installed via the Microsoft AutoUpdate program, offers the following fixes and changes:

- This update fixes critical issues and also helps to improve security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code.

In an updated security bulletin, the company admitted that a “specially crafted” Excel file could allow unwanted access, thus leading to the updates.

Microsoft Office 2011 requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later to install and run and is available for US$149.99 and up depending on the suite purchased.

On Thursday, Adobe released version 10.0.3 of its Adobe Reader application. The update, which can also be snagged through the Adobe Update Utility, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Addresses critical security vulnerabilities while providing more stability. Adobe always recommends that you install the latest security updates.

Acrobat Reader 10.0.3 and Acrobat Pro requires an Intel-based processor and Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

Microsoft releases 14.1 update for Office 2011, 12.2.9 update for Office 2008

On Monday afternoon, Microsoft released version 14.1.0 (or Service Pack 1) of its popular Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac suite. The update, a 246 megabyte download, can also be located, snagged and installed via the Microsoft AutoUpdate program, offers the following fixes and changes:
- Security is improved. This update fixes vulnerabilities in Office 2011 that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. For more information, see the security bulletin that was listed earlier in this document.

- Stability is improved. This update fixes an issue that causes Office 2011 applications to close unexpectedly when you open or use Office 2011 applications.

- Alt Text authoring is included. This update enables the authoring of Alt Text for objects, such as shapes, pictures, tables, charts, SmartArt, and movies in Office 2011 applications.

Improvements for Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011:
- The Solver add-in is included. This update includes functionality that lets you install the Solver analysis tools in Excel 2011.

Improvements for Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac 2011:

Late Wednesday, Mozilla.org released version 3.6.14 of its Firefox web browser. The new version stands as an 18.7 megabyte download offered the following fixes and changes:

- Several fixes to improve performance, stability and security.

Firefox 3.6.14 is available in more than 70 different languages and requires a G3, G4, G5 or Intel-based Mac, Mac OS X 10.4 or later and 128MB of RAM to install and run.
