Updates: They tend to be useful.

Late Wednesday, Parallels released version 7.0.14922.693916 of its Parallels Desktop virtualization software. The new update, a 289 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:

- New interface languages, including Czech, Portuguese, Chinese Simplified, and Chinese Traditional.

- Option to choose Mac OS X Snow Leopard-style full screen mode instead of native OS X Lion full screen mode.

- Better compatibility with FileVault.

- Improved compatibility with FaceTime HD camera and other USB devices for virtual machines with more than 2 GB of memory.

- Resolves a problem with Mac slow boot time.

Parallels Desktop 7 retails for US$79.99 and requires a 64-bit Intel-based processor, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later, 2GB of RAM (4GB recommended to run Windows 7), at least 700 MB of space available on the boot volume for Parallels Desktop installation and 15 GB of available disk space for Windows.

Microsoft Office 2008 updated to 12.3.1, adds Word, Entourage changes

Microsoft has posted an update to version 12.3.1 for Office 2008 for Mac. The update, a 333 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

Improvements for Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac:
Help works in all languages – This update resolves an issue that causes online Word Help not to display in some languages.

Improvements for Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac:
Time zone information is updated – This update provides updated time zone information.

Microsoft Office 2008 12.3.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later to install and run.

Onyx, Titanium Software’s popular freeware multifunction utility for Mac OS X, has been updated to version 2.4.1. The new version, a 6.6 megabyte download adds the following fixes and changes:

- New icon.

- OnyX doesn’t run after restart.

- Deleting the Internet Cache improved.

- Some bugs corrected.

Drive Genius 3.1.2 update released

Prosoft Engineering has released Drive Genius 3.1.2, an updated version of its drive repair and recovery program for Mac OS X.

The new version, a 15.5 megabyte download” target=”_blank”>download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Application Help is now provided via the standard Mac OS X help viewer.

- Repartition will automatically prompt to create a new volume when an existing volume is shrunk.

Drive Genius retails for US$99 and requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later installed to install and run.

SpamSieve updated to 2.8.7

Michael Tsai’s must-have shareware program, SpamSieve, has just been updated to version 2.8.7. The new version, an 8.5 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and improvements, as listed here.

SpamSieve is available for a US$30 registration fee and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run. The new version can either be downloaded directly from the web site or brought up to the current version via the program’s built-in update feature.

Mozilla releases Firefox 6.0.1 update

Late Sunday, Mozilla.org released version 6.0.1 of its Firefox web browser. The new version stands as an 28.1 megabyte download offered the following change:

- Revoked the root certificate for DigiNotar due to fraudulent SSL certificate issuance (see bug 682927 and the security advisory).

Firefox 6.0.1 requires an Intel-based Mac and Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.

Late Wednesday, shareware developer Maintain released version 5.0 of Cocktail (Lion Edition), Cocktail, the popular shareware utility program that allows for additional Mac OS X system tests. The new version, a 2 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and features:

- Added Mac OS X 10.7 compatibility.

- Miscellaneous bug fixes and overall improvements.

- Updated Automator actions.

- Revised Help files.

Cocktail 5.0 retails for a US$19.00 shareware registration fee and requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later to install and run.

Apple releases Boot Camp 3.3 update

Late Wednesday, Apple released Boot Camp Software Update 3.3, an update which offered revised Windows support for Macs running Boot Camp 3.x, included as part of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Apple only notes that update supplies “critical bug fixes and hardware support.”

This update is targeted at users running Windows 7 in either the 32 or 64-bit version via Boot Camp 3.2 on Snow Leopard.

Macs running 10.7 Lion do not need the update, as that version (Boot Camp 4) can upgrade itself. Users running Boot Camp 3.2 can download the new package through Software Update or from Apple’s download page.

The update also offers specific support for the ATI-Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, Apple USB Ethernet Adapter, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and addresses critical bug fixes.

That update addressed users of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 running BootCamp 3.1 on Snow Leopard.

Apple releases iTunes 10.4.1 update

Late Monday, Apple also released iTunes 10.4.1, the latest version of its multimedia/jukebox application for Mac OS X. The new version, a 90.3 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Fixes a problem where the media keys on some third-party keyboards work inconsistently with iTunes.

- Addresses issues with adding artwork to songs and videos.

- Resolves an issue which may cause iTunes to become unresponsive when purchasing an HD movie.

- Fixes a problem where iTunes may take longer than expected to open after waking your Mac from sleep.

- Addresses issues with VoiceOver support.

iTunes 10.4.1 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.
