Apple appears to have nixed the “Fruitfly” malware strain.

The malware, which has been patched over, relied on antiquated code predating OS X. Although older, the Fruitfly malware had been used in real-world attacks on biomedical research groups according to security software maker Malwarebytes.

Fruitfly operated by communicating with two command-and-control servers, and can perform actions like typing, webcam and screen captures, and moving and clicking a mouse cursor, Malwarebytes said in a blog post on Wednesday. It also maps other devices on a network and tries to connect to them.

Apple on Tuesday pulled watchOS 3.1.1, the latest update for its watchOS operating system, following complaints that the update rendered an unknown number of Apple Watch Series 2 units unusable.

Apple Watch owners attempting to upgrade to watchOS 3.1.1 through the dedicated Watch app on iOS will find watchOS 3.1 as the current version, meaning Apple has temporarily disabled the point update after its release on Monday.

The update appears to have bricked an unknown number of Apple Watch Series 2 devices. Customers impacted by the faulty code reported seeing a recovery screen with a red exclamation mark after attempting to install watchOS 3.1.1. The foreboding prompt urged users to visit www.apple.com/help/watch, a landing page that ultimately leads to a Support Document covering frozen Apple Watch hardware.

AgileBits has released version 6.5 of its 1Password password storage utility. The new version now features support for the Touch ID and Touch Bar features on 2016 MacBook Pros.

Touch ID must be enabled from 1Password’s Security Preferences menu, but will then let people unlock the app with a quick fingerprint scan. Touch Bar support should make it easier to run searches, add new items, and switch between vaults as well as lock them down.

Apple on Wednesday issued a new build of iOS 10.1.1, the current version of the iOS 10 operating system. The update is minor enough that it did not warrant a full 10.x.x number change, but it does include an updated build number.

The new build has been labeled “14B150”, whereas the initial iOS 10.1.1 build was labeled “14B100”.

This new build is only available as a download from Apple’s servers and cannot be obtained over-the-air at this time for those who have already installed the first version of iOS 10.1.1. The new version of iOS 10.1.1 will likely be provided to those who have yet to install iOS 10.1.1, as it otherwise requires an iTunes connection to download and install.
