Rumor: Next-gen iPhone to feature 12-megapixel Sony sensor with RGBW support

It’s a rumor, but it’s a rumor that could point towards an really nifty camera for the next-gen iPhone.

A recent report states that the next-gen iPhone will arrive with a 12-megapixel Sony sensor that makes use of the firm’s RGBW technology to help with low-light photography.

Sources downplayed the possibility of a dual-camera setup with wide-angle and telephoto lenses, but noted that RGBW means an alleged switch to smaller pixels won’t come at the expense of low-light imaging.

Apple adds on new data providers for Apple Maps, including NavAds and Gas Buddy

Apple’s apparently adding to its list of information providers for its Maps application.

Although the company continues to have TomTom at the top of its list of data providers, additional contributors cited on the acknowledgement page include, E-WEGO SARL, NavAds BV, and Yellow Pages Turkey. The new data sources are likely noticeable in regions around the world including France and Turkey where the information is sourced.

Apple may have inadvertently outed upcoming iPhone 5c with Touch ID sensor

An inadvertent promotional photo may have just outed an iPhone 5c with a Touch ID sensor.

A new promotional photo posted to Apple’s online storefront this week shows what appears to be a new version of the iPhone 5c, complete with a Touch ID embedded in its home button.

The photo was part of a promotion for Apple’s recently-announced Lightning dock. Aside from the Touch ID home button, the pictured device looks much the same. The FaceTime camera remains above the earpiece, while the lock button is on the top right and distinct, pill-shaped buttons control the volume.

Analyst predicts Apple will ship less than 15 million Apple Watch units by September, cites supply chain issues, softening demand

The Apple Watch’s supply chain could remain constricted for some time to come.

Releasing a revised forecast note to investors, respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities stated that the Apple Watch is likely to see less than 15 million units shipped through the end of September.

In the note, he said that Apple Watch shipments for fiscal year 2015 are likely to be lower than most analysts and investors expect.

Apple’s fiscal year runs through the end of September, which means the 15-million forecast does not apply to holiday 2015 sales.

Apple releases Watch OS 1.0.1 update, offers Siri improvements, additional language support, other new features

The first Apple Watch update is here.

And it includes a slew of interesting fixes and changes.

On Tuesday, Apple released its Watch OS 1.0.1 update. To install the update, connect your Apple Watch to power, make sure it has at least a 50 percent charge, connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network, make sure your iPhone is within range of your Apple Watch, on your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap My Watch > General > Software Update.

Apple states HomeKit-based devices to surface in June, refutes reports of delays

The HomeKit stuff will begin arriving in June according to Apple.

Refuting a recent report claiming delays with the home automation software platform would push back the launch until August or September, Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller went on record as saying that “HomeKit [hardware certification] has been available for just a few months and we already have dozens of partners who have committed to bringing HomeKit accessories to market and we’re looking forward to the first ones coming next month.”

Apple Watch open to Activation Lock bypass, can be paired with other iPhones

This may be something that’ll need to be fixed in a near-term firmware update.

A new video has shown that the Apple Watch’s wrist-detection, which is designed to ask for your passcode if the wearable is removed from your wrist. The iDownloadBlog video demonstrates how the Apple Watch can be reset without having to enter the passcode, then paired with any other iPhone.

iPhones are protected by Activation Lock, which means that even if a thief performs a hard reset of the phone, it cannot be reactivated without the original owner’s Apple ID and password. The Apple Watch, however, has no such protection, and does not require a passcode to wipe it.

Hacker offers proof of concept of web browser running on Apple Watch

It’s hard to say whether you’ll want a web browser on your wrist, but the hack’s been sorter out.

iOS developer Nicholas Allegra, better known by his handle “comex” within the jailbreaking community, presented a short video that shows a web browser running on the Apple Watch. The fifteen-second clip shows Allegra tapping, panning and zooming on the Google homepage on the Apple Watch, but the functionality is limited as to be expected because of the small screen size and lack of an on-screen keyboard.

Rumor: Rose gold color, 12MP camera, additional RAM, other features planned for next-gen iPhone

The rumor mill is humming about the next-gen iPhone for 2015. So far, there are rumors of a rose gold casing color similar to the Apple Watch Edition, a 12-megapixel camera and 2-gigabytes of RAM and other changes.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities issued a new research note on Tuesday, in which he revealed a number of changes planned for Apple’s so-called “iPhone 6s.” Specifically, he said that Apple will offer a new rose gold option, though he didn’t indicate how much the high-end luxury model might cost.

E-Kaia power adapter extracts energy from plants, can charge mobile devices

You’ve always known that nearby plants were hoarding the power you needed to charge your iOS device.

Now it’s time to get that power back.

A new device called “E-Kaia”, developed by researchers in Chile, allows users to collect leftover energy created by photosynthesis to charge small devices, like mobile phones or LED lights, using a single healthy plant. As noted by the Manquehue Institute, the E-Kaia team says its invention can output as much as 5 volts at 0.6 amps.
