iOS-gear-settingsApple has just released the latest beta update to iOS 7.1. Currently, the official 7.1 update is expected to drop sometime in March. Other than numerous backend improvements and bug fixes, Apple seems to be tweaking the interface as well. Developers who have had a chance to go over 7.1 list several screens that replace rectangular buttons with new circular ones. I guess they felt there simply wasn’t enough circles already. A few of the other changes that have been found are listed below;

  • Parallax can be disabled for wallpapers
  • Phone now has a new dialer and answer UI
  • New Repeat and Shuffle buttons
  • New power off UI
  • New dialogue in Safari ‘Search or enter an address’ now reads ‘Search web or enter site name’
  • New ‘New’ button for creating iTunes Radio stations in Music
  • New reduce white point option in accessibility contrast settings

apple_logoApple posted the date of its first quarter earnings release and conference call on its Investor web page, announcing the date to be January 27th. MacRumors notes that the release will…

“… provide a look into initial iPad Air and Retina iPad mini sales during their first quarter of availability as well as iPhone 5s and 5c sales throughout the holiday. Apple reported a record number of iPhone/iPad sales during fiscal 2013, at 150 million iPhones and 71 million iPads. In its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call, Apple guided expected revenue of $55–58 billion and gross margin between 36.5 and 37.5 percent. If the company meets even the low end of that guidance, it will count as the strongest quarter for Apple in history.”

It is expected that CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer will be on hand for questions. Apple will live-stream the earnings call via its Investor website. A link to the upcoming broadcast should show up on the web page in the coming weeks.

Will the next NSA satellite have an Apple logo?

geoeye-1-satellite-apple-460Well, perhaps that is a stretch, but Apple’s possible connection with the NSA was revealed in a report dating back to 2008. Reuters explains that the report outlined a system that the NSA was developing, called DROPOUTJEEP, which would be software implanted into an iPhone that allows infiltrators to push and pull and retrieve data from iPhones such as contact lists. The report didn’t actually specify any involvement by or with Apple, although the iPhone is referenced in the report.

iOS-vs-AndroidBefore we ring out 2013, we probably want to slip in that Apple did extremely well against Android over the holiday season. Regarding apps, it appears that the AppStore did quite a bit of business around Christmas as compared to Android. IBM’s latest Digital Analytics Benchmark Report found that purchases made from iOS devices accounted for about 23 percent of the online shopping done on Christmas Day in the U.S.

Day6ApplegiveawayThe watch for free gifts from Apple continues. For day six of its 12 Days promotion, Apple is offering one song and one video from Avicii’s New Years Eve Mix. With less than 24 hours to go until New Years, this seems like an appropriate choice. Keep watching the PowerPage as we run-down each giveaway until the last on January 6th. Maybe I’ll listen to it while I’m working NYE.

Apple-iTunes-Connect-Mobile-AppDevelopers were (probably) happy last Friday when iTunes Connect went back online. iTunes Connect is the tool that developers use to upload apps, change text and pricing, and monitor their sales in the AppStore. Back in November, Apple sent out emails to developers notifying them of the holiday downtime, affecting both Mac and iOS software.

“iTunes Connect will be temporarily unavailable from Saturday, December 21, to Friday, December 27, 2013.

During that time, iTunes Connect will not be accessible and you will not be able to submit any apps or In-App Purchases. Processing of any Newsstand Atom feeds will be delayed until after December 27. Sales and Trends reports via the Autoingestion tool will be available but may also be delayed.”

The email went on to mention several other activities that would be postponed until Dec. 27th. So, you can expect a few app updates rolling out this week.

Dropbox offers 1 GB of space for linking to Mailbox app

07-mailbox_icon-300x300Dropbox sent out an email to users with an offer for more space. In celebration of their addition of iCloud and Yahoo email accounts, linking your Dropbox account with the Mailbox app for iPhone and iPad will award you an additional 1 GB of storage space on your Dropbox account. Here is the text from the Dropbox email;

“Great news! In case you haven’t heard, we’re offering 1GB of additional space to users who link their Dropbox account to Mailbox.

What’s Mailbox?
Mailbox is the newest member of the Dropbox family. It’s a redesigned email inbox for a world on the go. Mailbox uses swipe gestures and “snoozes” to help you focus on the messages that need your attention now. And today Mailbox added support for Yahoo and iCloud email accounts!

How do I get more space?
Download Mailbox here if you haven’t already, then go into Mailbox Settings and select Dropbox to link your Dropbox account. Voilà — 1GB of space will be added to your account.”

Until now, Mailbox was a Gmail-only client, which may have turned off users of other email systems, iCloud in particular. Now it remains to be seen if Mailbox can compete with the likes of Molto and Boxer, who have attempted to fill the gap while Mailbox has lagged behind in it’s support for iCloud.

Apple and Bitcoin, oil and water?

Bitcoin-Accp-Here-notOne of my terrible regrets is that I didn’t hop on the Bitcoin train when I had the chance. I read about it, created an account, had one of my computers generate some coin (took forever), and decided it wasn’t worth my time to fart around with unrecognized virtual currency. If I had left that computer running, who knows what that would be worth now. Who knew? Whether it lasts or not is to be seen, but it is certainly getting a lot of attention now. If you’re not up to speed on the whole internet bit trading thing, start with this article over at The Apple Core for more info and the recent explosion of Bitcoin mining.

Apple includes US in 12 Days app giveaway

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 10.36.56 AMThis is nothing new to European and Canadian iThing customers, but Apple has released the 12 Days app which offers 12 days of free downloads, including music, apps, books, movies, and more. The free items are only valid for 24 hours and some content may not be available in all areas. The promotion starts on Dec. 26th and runs until Jan. 6th and is the first time Apple has offered it to US customers. For the past three years (introduced in Dec 2010) that the holiday promotion has been going, the goodies have only been available in Europe and Canada, although it was only available in the UK the first year, adding eligible locations in Europe and Canada in 2011. According to a MacNN article from 2011, there is a history behind the 12 Days giveaway.

“[...] the countdown has its roots in Eastern Christianity, which traditionally holds the Feast of Epiphany on Jan. 6 to celebrate Jesus’ baptism.”

“Many countries outside the United States mark at least the first of the twelve nights, often called Boxing Day or St. Stephens Day. The twelfth night is also seen as the traditional day to remove the last vestiges of Christmas decorations and celebratory foods.”

There is also that 12 Days of Christmas song. This holiday promotion is the second offering from Apple this year. A few days ago we reported on the Holiday Playlist music giveaway which offered 8 free holiday songs from the iTunes Music Store. There’s no calling Apple the Grinch this year.
