Adobe releases Photoshop Elements 12.0

You can’t knock a new version of Photoshop Elements.

On Tuesday, graphics giant Adobe announced the released of its Photoshop Elements 12 consumer image editing suite, the new version, a 1.55 gigabyte download with a 30 day demo available, adds the following features and changes:
New:
– Take your photos and videos with you wherever you go: Easily view, relive, and share your Elements photos on your smartphone and tablet. And finally–unlock the photos from your mobile device, and see them in your Elements albums back at home.

– Easily move objects: Move objects in a photo and have the background automatically filled in with Content-Aware Move.

– Pet-Eye Correction: Remove green, yellow, and other “pet eye” discolorations as easily as you remove red eye in photos of people.

– Share from Editor: Sharing options previously only available in the Organizer are now available in the Editor.

– Add your personal touch, instantly: Use a variety of one-touch Frames, Effects, and Textures to add depth to your snapshots.

Enhanced:
– Discover a friendly and intuitive environment: Organize, edit, create, and share more quickly and easily thanks to big, bold icons; a helpful Action bar; and the ability to choose from Quick, Guided, and Expert editing modes to fit your needs.

– Go from flawed to phenomenal in seconds: Get the photo fixes you’re looking for with one-step shortcuts that whiten teeth or make skies a vibrant blue. Make unwanted photo elements vanish with one stroke of the Spot Healing Brush, and use Auto Smart Tone for intelligent photo corrections.

– Fix photos the easy way: Easily straighten a photo and fill in any missing background with Content-Aware Fill for the Straighten tool. Available in Expert mode.

Apple releases iTunes 11.1 update

This should add some nifty and long-awaited stuff to iTunes.

On Wednesday, Apple released version 11.1 of its iTunes multimedia/jukebox application. The new version, a 215 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:
– iTunes Radio: iTunes Radio is a great new way to discover music. Choose from over 250 stations or start a new one from your favorite artist or song. Enjoy iTunes Radio ad-free once you subscribe to iTunes Match.

– Genius Shuffle: Introducing a magical new way to experience your music library. Choose Genius Shuffle and iTunes instantly plays songs that go great together. Click it again to hear something new: enjoying your music has never been this easy.

– Podcast Stations: You can now create custom stations of your favorite podcasts that update automatically with new episodes. Your stations, subscriptions, and current play position sync over iCloud to the Podcasts app.

– Sync with iOS 7: You can now use iTunes to sync your favorite music, movies, and more to devices with iOS 7. In addition, iTunes now makes it even easier to quickly organize and sync apps to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

iTunes 11.1 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to install and run.

On Tuesday, shareware developer Maintain released version 6.8 of CocktailCocktail (Mountain Lion Edition), the popular shareware utility program that allows for additional Mac OS X system tests. The new version, a 5.6 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and features:
– Major improvements to the Pilot scheduler. The scheduler will be automatically disabled after installing this update and have to be enabled manually.

– Addresses compatibility issues with the latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome.

– Added OS X 10.8.5 compatibility.

– Resolves a number of other issues discovered in the previous release.

Cocktail 6.8 retails for a US$19.00 shareware registration fee and requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.8 or later to install and run.

Adobe releases Lightroom 5.2 update

A helpful update’s a helpful update.

Adobe on Tuesday announced the availability of the latest version of its prosumer photo editing software, Lightroom 5.2. The new version, a 475.7 megabyte download via MacUpdate, offers the following fixes and changes:
– A color noise reduction slider in the Detail panel and a feather adjustment slider for the Spot Heal tool.

– Bug fixes, new lens profiles, and support for 16 new cameras, including the Canon EOS 70D, Fujifilm X-M1, and Sony A3000.

Lightroom 5.2 is available for both Mac and PC platforms. Mac users will need a multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support, running OS X 10.7 or later along with at least 2GB of RAM (4GB recommended) 2GB of available HDD space, and a 1024×768 resolution to install and run.

The software is available from Adobe’s website for US$79 when upgrading from an earlier version, or US$149 for new users. Those already subscribed to Adobe’s Creative Cloud service will find that the new software is included in their memberships.

On Tuesday, Mozilla.org released version 24.0 of its Firefox web browser. The new version, a 46.0 megabyte download via MacUpdate, adds the following fixes and changes:
– Support for new scrollbar style in OS X 10.7 and newer.

– Implemented Close tabs to the right.

– Social: Ability to tear-off chat windows to view separately by simply dragging them out.

– Accessibility related improvements on using pinned tabs.

– Major SVG rendering improvements around Image tiling and scaling.

– Improved and unified Browser console for enhanced debugging experience, replacing existing Error console.

– Removed support for Sherlock files that are loaded from application or profile directory.

– Support for W3C touch events disabled.

Firefox 24.0 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 or later to install and run.

Parallels announced its Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac client today. The new version, a 356 megabyte download, offers the following set of fixes and features:
– Resolves an issue with horizontal scrolling using a mouse not working in some applications.

– You can now choose whether to download and install the Parallels Access agent, used with the Parallels Access app to work with your Windows and Mac applications from your iPad.

And it is a hefty update.

Late Friday, software developer Quark released version 10.0.0.1 of its QuarkXPress design application. The 293.5 megabyte update, which can be downloaded here, adds the following changes:
– Xenon Graphics Engine The new state-of-the-art Xenon Graphics Engine takes full advantage of your computer’s processing power, rendering rich PDFs, Photoshop and TIFF images giving you maximum performance at the most appropriate resolution.

Apple releases Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 4.09

Late Thursday, Apple posted its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 4.09, an update designed to extend RAW image compatibility for the Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11 applications.

The update, a 6.9 megabyte download, adds support for the following cameras and adds the following fixes as well:
– Olympus PEN E-P5.

– Restore lens correction to Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images.

– Address a white balance issue with some Nikon images that were modified by third-party applications.

The update requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later to install and run and is also available via Mac OS X’s built-in Software Update feature.

Microsoft releases Office 2011 14.3.7 update

An update’s always appreciated.

Microsoft on Tuesday released version 14.3.7 of its Microsoft Office 2011 suite for the Mac. The update, a 113 megabyte download, features the following changes:
– This update fixes critical issues and also helps to improve security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. For more information about this update, please visit the Microsoft Web site.

– Applies to: Office 2011, Office 2011 Home and Business Edition, Word 2011, Excel 2011, PowerPoint 2011, Outlook 2011, Office for Mac Standard 2011 Edition, Microsoft Office for Mac Home & Student 2011, and Microsoft Office for Mac Academic 2011.

On Tuesday, Adobe released version 11.0.04 of its Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat Pro applications. The updates, which can also be snagged through the Adobe Update Utility, add the following fixes and changes:

– This update provides system requirement enhancements, mitigation for security issues, improved overall stability, bug fixes, and feature enhancements.

Acrobat Reader 11.0.04 and Acrobat Pro 11.0.04 require an Intel-based processor and Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to install and run.
