Microsoft Office 2008 updated to 12.3.1, adds Word, Entourage changes

Microsoft has posted an update to version 12.3.1 for Office 2008 for Mac. The update, a 333 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

Improvements for Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac:
Help works in all languages – This update resolves an issue that causes online Word Help not to display in some languages.

Improvements for Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac:
Time zone information is updated – This update provides updated time zone information.

Microsoft Office 2008 12.3.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later to install and run.

Adobe Reader updated to 10.1.1

On Wednesday, Adobe released version 10.1.1 of its Adobe Reader application. The update, which can also be snagged through the Adobe Update Utility, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Acrobat fails to display Rupee symbol.

- Unable to see the last item in drop down list when navigating through list with down arrow.

- Custom scan does not work with Acrobat X.

- Comments and Annotations do not work properly in Workspace launched via Safari on a Mac OS.

- A signed PDF can cause the viewer in a browser to crash.

- Submission of signed data in Acrobat X is slow.

- Unable to input using Japanese IME after using drop box with protected mode.

- Opening a PDF with “CR” in its name gives an error to accept license after disabling Protected Mode.

- Closing a form in a browser may cause the browser to hang.

- Protected mode on XP: IME mode remained Half-alphanumeric mode automatically and cannot change back to Hiragana mode again after move mouse focus from dropdown field to Japanese text filed.

- Form data cannot be exported to CSV in some cases.

- Portfolio behavior different from 9.x with respect to coversheets.

- formBridge events not firing in Portfolio loaded within Reader plug-in inside LiveCycle workspace.

- Touching up text causes ligatures to be dropped.

- IE 6 crashes with magnifier when filling out a text field of a table in a form.

- Reader X call to LiveCycle server fails when submitting an authentication call via SOAP.

- PDFMaker hangs while converting an attached Word file with hidden text to pdf.

- PDFMaker for Office 2007 duplicates headings when both normal and custom headings exist in the same document.

- PDFMaker for MS Office 2003: ES2 (LC 9.0) rendition removes spaces between the Kanji character and the English character while converting an MS word file to PDF.

- PDF was displayed in browser window directly instead of embedded in a ZCI html container when ‘Enable Javascript for this document one time.

- Acrobat Updater Resets “Adobe PDF” PostScript Printer Driver Instance Settings.

- The Share Pane has been renamed to “Tools Pane”. The Tools Pane has been renamed to the “Extended Pane” for Adobe Reader (this is only not for Acrobat). This change is designed to facilitate future additions and enhancements to the Tools area.

- The Welcome screen (with the recent file list) can be disabled via three methods:

- Improved stability and integration with MS Outlook on 64 bit systems. 8.x products redirect users to Reader 10.x downloads if new updates are available. Note that 8.x will be end-of-lifed in November, 2011.

- Major changes in the user JavaScript and global variables features as described in the Application Security Guide. If you use these features, you must make changes to your distributed products.

Acrobat Reader 10.1.1 and Acrobat Pro requires an Intel-based processor and Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later to install and run.

VMWare releases Fusion 4.0.1 update

On Wednesday, virtualization softare maker VMWare released version 4.0.1 of its Fusion software for the Mac.

Similar to other virtualization software packages, VMWare allows users to run alternate operating systems such as Windows and Linux distributions on Intel-based Macs at native speeds. Other features, such as Unity, allow users to run and minimize Windows applications from the Mac OS X Dock.

The new version, a 180 megabyte download via MacUpdate, can be found here, offers the following new features and fixes:

- Designed for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

- Brand-new user interface to offer an even more mac-like experience when running Windows and Mac applications side-by-side without rebooting.

- Turbocharged performance with up to 2.5x faster 3D graphics.

- Highly optimized 64-bit engine and multi-core processing faster than ever.

- Full Windows 7 support including Windows Aero and Flip 3D animations.

- Migration Assistant for Windows to transfer your entire PC to your Mac.

- Run OS X Lion in a virtual machine.

- More than 90 new features.

Fusion 4.0.1 retails for US$49.99 and requires an Intel-based Mac, 2 GB of RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.7 or later (10.7 recommended) and a copy of Windows (if you’ll be installing Windows).

Microsoft Office 2011 updated to 14.1.3

It may not be the sexiest update in the world, but here’s hoping it helps.

On Tuesday, Microsoft released its Microsoft Office 2011 14.1.3 update. The update, a 112 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and features:

- Office documents open in all browsers – This update resolves an issue that causes Office documents not to open in certain browsers.

Improvements for Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac 2011:
- Stability is improved in PowerPoint – This update fixes an issue that causes PowerPoint to close unexpectedly. This issue occurs when you press the Command and Tab keys to open another application when you are in Presenter view.

Improvements for Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011:
- Stability is improved in Excel – This update fixes an issue that causes Excel to close unexpectedly in the following situations:
When you move worksheets to a new worksheet or workbook.
When you save some files.

Improvements for Microsoft Word for Mac 2011:
- Citation options in Dutch appear correctly. This update fixes an issue that causes the Dutch version of Word to change the citation options to English after you install Office for Mac 2011 14.1 Service Pack 1.

- PivotTable field setting enabled.This update enables the PivotTable field setting Show Items with no data.

Improvements for Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011:
- Contact images display in the Contacts Search boxThis update fixes an issue that causes Outlook not to display contact images in the Contacts Search box.

- Import from Apple Mail is disabled in Outlook on Mac OS X 10.7 LionThis update disables the option to import from Apple Mail in Outlook because it does not work as expected in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

- The “Remove from View” option is enabled for shared calendarsThis update fixes an issue that occurs when the user adds shared calendars and opens the contextual menu for the shared calendar. The Remove from View option is disabled from the contextual menu.

- Free/busy information for Exchange 2003-based mailboxes displays correctlyThis update fixes an issues that causes the display of free/busy information for Exchange 2003-based mailboxes to be off by one hour when scheduling a meeting.

- Time zone information is updated. This update provides updated time zone information.

Microsoft Office 2011 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later to install and run.

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.7.2 seed to developers, includes built-in iCloud support for the first time

It’s inevitable.

And with system updates, that’s never a bad thing.

Per AppleInsider, Apple on Sunday seeded Mac OS X 10.7.2 beta to developers with support for the beta version of iCloud incorporated directly into the build.

For the first time, the pre-release version, labeled build 11C55, does not require a separate install of iCloud services. No known issues are listed for the beta. Apple reportedly lists iCloud, Address Book, iCal, Mail, Safari, and MobileMe as focus areas for the release.

One source familiar with the matter also indicated that Apple has begun transitioning user accounts from MobileMe to iCloud, allowing the transfer of mail, contacts, and calendars to the iCloud.com.

The last beta release of Mac OS X 10.7.2 came on Sept. 2 and included the 10th test version of iCloud as a separate install.

Developers have seen a steady stream of beta software as Apple gears up for several major releases this fall. The launch of iOS 5 and iCloud will be supported by updated versions of iTunes and Mac OS X. Last Friday, Apple issued a beta release of iTunes 10.5, along with pre-release versions of iWork for iOS. The company also recently extended the test period of its iTunes Match service to additional developers.

Apple launched Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on the Mac App Store in July. The company then updated its flagship desktop operating system to version 10.7.1 in August, adding improvements to Wi-Fi and audio out functionality.

Apple releases Security Update 2011-005

On Friday, Apple also released Security Update 2011-005 for the Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7 operating systems. The update, a 15.6 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Certificate Trust Policy:

Available for: Mac OS X v10.6.8, Mac OS X Server v10.6.8, OS X Lion v10.7.1, Lion Server v10.7.1

Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may intercept user credentials or other sensitive information

Description: Fraudulent certificates were issued by multiple certificate authorities operated by DigiNotar. This issue is addressed by removing DigiNotar from the list of trusted root certificates, from the list of Extended Validation (EV) certificate authorities, and by configuring default system trust settings so that DigiNotar’s certificates, including those issued by other authorities, are not trusted.

Security Update 2011-005 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later on the Mac OS X 10.6 end or Mac OS X 10.7.1 or later on the Mac OS X 10.7 end to install and run.

Drive Genius 3.1.2 update released

Prosoft Engineering has released Drive Genius 3.1.2, an updated version of its drive repair and recovery program for Mac OS X.

The new version, a 15.5 megabyte download” target=”_blank”>download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Application Help is now provided via the standard Mac OS X help viewer.

- Repartition will automatically prompt to create a new volume when an existing volume is shrunk.

Drive Genius retails for US$99 and requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later installed to install and run.

Parallels 7 upgrade goes live, available via retail on September 6

Upgrading: It’s not always a bad thing.

Per AppleInsider, Windows virtualization favorite Parallels Deskktop has reached version 7, the new version adding faster performance and new support for Mac OS X Lion, including Windows integration of apps in Launchpad and windows in Mission Control and the ability to run an instance of Lion within Lion itself.

The new update allows users to share iSight or FaceTime HD cameras between Mac and Windows apps, and adds the ability to run Mac OS X Lion as a guest OS. This summer, Apple relaxed its licensing for Mac OS X to allow Lion users to run up to two instances of the client OS on any Mac.

Previously, Apple only allowed Mac OS X Server to run in virtualization, and required that each virtual instance use a different license.

Beginning with Lion and the availability of Mac OS X through the Mac App Store, Server is now an application package that is hosted on Mac OS X Lion, and neither purchase uses serial numbers.

The Mac OS X Lion end user license agreement now states users may “install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software,” something virtualization tools can now take advantage of to offer the ability to host Lion as a guest OS.

Additional new features:
Among a list of 90 other enhancements, Parallels Desktop 7 can also take advantage of 1 GB of video RAM to accommodate high resolutions and color depth.

Parallels says graphics performance is up to 45 percent faster in 3D operations, and Windows start, stop and resume features are as much as 60 percent faster than previous versions. The company also claims that copy operations within Windows are now 120 percent as fast as its competitor’s product.

A new Parallels Mobile app for iOS allows iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to interact and control their Mac or Windows desktop guest OS instances, remotely (over WiFi or mobile) start or stop apps, play back music and audio remotely, and copy and paste data between their mobile device and Windows programs.

The new version, which will sell for US$79.99 in its standard version, US$49.99 as an upgrade to existing Desktop 5 or 6 users, or US$39.99 in a student edition, will enter the retail channel September 6.

However, upgrades for existing users became available for immediate purchase and download this afternoon.

Parallels 7 requires a 64-bit Intel-based processor, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later, 2GB of RAM (4GB recommended to run Windows 7), at least 700 MB of space available on the boot volume for Parallels Desktop installation and 15 GB of available disk space for Windows.
