Apple updates Remote app to version 2.1, includes AirPlay features

Sometimes it’s the little software updates that prove the coolest.

Per Macworld, Apple has released version 2.1 of the Remote application for its iOS-based devices.

The new version, which can be snagged via the App Store, includes the following fixes and changes:

- AirPlay video support to control iTunes on your computer to stream videos to an Apple TV.

- Internet radio control to play thousands of internet radio streams in iTunes on your computer.

- The ability to control iTunes on your computer to play Movies and TV shows that are rented from the iTunes Store.

- Addresses issues connecting to an iTunes library or Apple TV.

- Includes stability and performance improvements.

Remote 2.1 requires iOS 3.1.2 or later to install and run and is available for free.

Microsoft releases 14.0.2 update for Office 2011

On Monday afternoon, Microsoft released version 14.0.2 of its popular Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac suite. The update, a 111 megabyte download which can also be located, snagged and installed via the Microsoft AutoUpdate program, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Reliability is improved when you open Office for Mac documents by using third-party applications: This update fixes an issue that causes Office for Mac documents not to open by using certain third-party applications.

- Office for Mac Updater request users to close Microsoft AutoUpdate during the update process:This update fixes an issue that causes Office for Mac updater to request users to close AutoUpdate when the Office updater is running. When the users close AutoUpdate, the updater also stops the Office update process.

Improvements for Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011:
- Stability is improved: This update fixes an issue that causes Outlook to crash or close unexpectedly sometimes when you import a .pst file that contains categories. Specifically, categories that have no category names assigned to them.

Microsoft Office 2011 requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later to install and run and is available for US$149.99 and up depending on the suite purchased.

Microsoft posts Office 12.2.8 update for Office 2008 for Mac

Microsoft has posted an update to version 12.2.8 for Office 2008 for Mac. As usual, the company states that the update improves stability and includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can potentially use to overwrite the contents of your Mac’s memory with malicious code.

According to Macworld, the update also fixes an issue in Entourage that causes the program to quit unexpectedly under certain circumstances.

The 332.8 MB update applies to Office 2008, Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, Office 2008 Special Media Edition, Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008, Entourage 2008, Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition and can be located, downloaded and installed via the Microsoft AutoUpdate feature.

- Add support for Red Hat 6 and Fedora 14 operating systems.

Elgato releases EyeTV 3.5 update

Late Monday, Elgato Systems released version 3.5 of its EyeTV software application, which finds and tracks all television programming you want to see and allows users to pause live television and save content to file.

The new version, a 104 megabyte update which can be found here via MacUpdate (and can also be found through EyeTV 3.0′s update feature), adds the following fixes and features:

- Enhanced performance & stability with EyeTV Netstream Sat.

- Recordings from IceTV are now correctly labeled as Movie or Series when exported.

- Fixes a problem where thumbnails were not always created for recordings.

- Fixes a problem where recordings without thumbnails had no artwork when exported.

- Fixes incorrect positioning of subtitles when changing between SD and HD channels.

- Fixes invalid characters being displayed in chapter names on the new Apple TV.

- Resolved an issue where EyeTV HD recordings in iPad format would display artifacts when played back on devices running iOS 4.

EyeTV 3.5 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run. The program retails for US$79.95.

Camino updated to 2.0.6

Late Wednesday, the Camino Project released version 2.0.6 of Camino, its free, open source web browser.
The new version, a 15.8 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Upgraded to the latest 1.9.0 version of the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine, which includes several critical security and stability fixes.

- Flash and Silverlight plug-ins no longer continually log errors to the Console on Mac OS X 10.6 when Camino is hidden or a browser window is minimized.

- Camino can now save usernames and passwords for web page forms which manipulate the username or password via JavaScript during form submission.

- Creating, editing, and removing bookmarks now updates the Spotlight metadata more reliably.
Downloaded files that do not have a content-length header will no longer appear as canceled downloads after restarting Camino.

Camino requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run.

Apple releases iTunes 10.1 update

Late Friday, Apple released iTunes 10.1, the latest version of its digital jukebox/digital hub software. The new version, an 84 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and new features:

- Use AirPlay to instantly and wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the all-new Apple TV.

- Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.2.

- Provides a number of important stability and performance improvements.

iTunes 10 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run and can be located, downloaded and installed via Mac OS X’s Software Update feature.

Late Wednesday, the Camino Project released version 2.0.5 of Camino, its free, open source web browser.
The new version, a 15.8 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Improved stability.

- Google Calendar’s print function now works in Camino.

- Plug-ins now receive the correct modifier keys after switching Spaces using keyboard shortcuts on Mac OS X 10.6.

- Links on the blocked site overlay are now visible even if the “Underline links” preference is off.

- Removed Bloglines from the supported web-based feed readers.

- Upgraded the bundled Java Embedding Plugin to version 0.9.7.4.

- Improved ad-blocking.

Mozilla releases Firefox 3.6.11 update

Late Tuesday, Mozilla.org released version 3.6.11 of its Firefox web browser. The new version, an 18.6 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and changes:

- Fixed several security issues.

- Fixed several stability issues.

Microsoft releases Office 2004 11.6.1, Office 2008 12.2.7, Open XML Converter 1.1.7 updates

Late Tuesday, Microsoft released version 11.6.1 of its Microsoft Office 2004 suite, version 12.2.7 of its Microsoft Office 2008 suite and version 1.1.7 of its Open XML Converter Utility. The Office updates, which weigh in at 16.4 and 333 megabytes, respectively, focus on improving security for both suites, fixing vulnerabilities that could allow malicious code to overwrite portions of your Mac’s memory and run arbitrary commands.

Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.1.7 is a 45MB update and repairs similar bugs.

The updates are free and available through the Microsoft AutoUpdate programs and require Mac OS X 10.2 or later to run Office 2004 and Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run Office 2008.
