Google Chrome 4.0.249.49 Beta Released for Mac

Google Chrome, Google’s new web browser, just reached version 4.0.249.49 for the Mac. The new version, a 17.7 megabyte download, offers the following the following change:

- This release includes a relatively minor update that corrects a potential issue with our auto-update processes for Mac users.

Google Chrome requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later and an Intel-based Mac to install and run.

Elgato Releases EyeTV 3.3 Update

On Wednesday, Elgato Systems released version 3.3 of its EyeTV software application, which finds and tracks all television programming you want to see and allows users to pause live television and save content to file.

The new version, which can be found here (and can also be found through EyeTV 3.0′s update feature), adds the following fixes and features:

- Improved general performance and stability.
- Improved scrolling in the Overlay menus.
- Fixed an issue where multiple tuners could not be accessed in the Overlay menu.
- Improved channel name detection and EPG for some Clear QAM cable systems. NOTE: To take advantage of this feature, EyeTV needs to do another Auto-Tune.
- Improved Digital Audio sound output for better compatibility with certain brands of home theater receivers.
- Improved support for EyeTV when running under Standard Accounts.
- Improved EyeTV’s automatic update process.
- Resolved issues with H.264 broadcasts in Denmark.
- Fixed issues with the new Silver Apple Remote under Mac OS 10.6.2.

EyeTV 3.3 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run. The program retails for US$79.95.

Apple Releases Firmware Updates for MacBook, MacBook Pro

Late Tuesday, Apple released its MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 for its MacBook notebook. The update, a 3.1 megabyte download, eliminates the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook computers.

The company also released its MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 for some MacBook Pro models. The update, a 3.4 megabyte download, also eliminates the noise made by the optical drive during startup and emerging from sleep.

Both updates can be snagged via Mac OS X’s built-in Software Update feature and require Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later to install and run.

VirtualBox 3.1 Released

VirtualBox, an open source x86 virtualization project available for free has just hit version 3.1. The new version, a 65 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and changes:

- Teleportation (aka live migration); migrate a live VM session from one host to another (see the manual for more information).
- VM states can now be restored from arbitrary snapshots instead of only the last one, and new snapshots can be taken from other snapshots as well (“branched snapshots”; see the manual for more information).
- 2D video acceleration for Windows guests; use the host video hardware for overlay stretching and color conversion (see the manual for more information).
- More flexible storage attachments: CD/DVD drives can be attached to arbitrary storage controllers, and there can be more than one such drive (the manual for more information).
- The network attachment type can be changed while a VM is running.
- Complete rewrite of experimental USB support for OpenSolaris hosts making use of the latest USB enhancements in Solaris Nevada 124 and higher.
- Significant performance improvements for PAE and AMD64 guests (VT-x and AMD-V only; normal (non-nested) paging).

Apple Releases iPhoto 8.1.1 Update

Apple on Tuesday released iPhoto 8.1.1, the latest version of its image organization and editing application. The update, a 12.3 megabyte download (courtesy of VersionTracker), adds the following fixes and changes:

- This update addresses issues affecting face recognition performance and accuracy.

- It also fixes minor issues in the areas of book ordering, and iPod touch support.

The update can be installed via the direct link or located and installed via Mac OS X’s Software Update feature.

iPhoto 8.1.1 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.

Late Friday, shareware developer Maintain released version 4.5 of Cocktail (Leopard Edition), Cocktail, the popular shareware utility program that allows for additional Mac OS X system tests.

The new version, a 1.9 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Added ability to clear data detectors caches.
- Added ability to clear QuickLook caches.
- Improvements on the clear dynamic link editor’s shared caches procedure.
- Improvements on the clear potentially harmful files procedure.
- Addresses an issue in which Cocktail may unexpectedly quit while clearing system caches.

Google Earth 5.1.3533.1731 Released

Late Wednesday, software giant Google released version 5.1.3533.1731 of its popular Google Earth program. The new version, a 15.9 megabyte download, adds the following new features:

- Improved Startup Time. The improvement is most noticeable when users launch the Earth application multiple times.
- Improved overall rendering performance. Changes include faster atmosphere rendering and using compressed textures whenever possible.
- Improved Road rendering Performance: Frame rate at places with dense road networks is three times faster than in previous releases.
- Improved memory utilization in the application.
- Significantly smoother frame-rate and less stuttering in the application compared to previous releases.
- Improved performance with large region based network link KML documents. Some of large KML documents are now processed and rendered at more than twice the speed of earlier releases.
- Improved KML document handling performance. Large regionated KML Image overlays are up to 80% faster than previous releases.
- Support for KML hint = moon or mars to switch to moon or mars based on kml document.
- Availability of one installer that installs both the Google Earth application and browser plugin.
- Desktop Application now works on Windows 7.
- Users can set the memory cache size up to 1024 MB now.

The new version requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.6.2 Update

Late Monday, Apple released its second maintenance update to its Mac OS X 10.6 (“Snow Leopard”) operating system. Mac OS X 10.6.2, a 473 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes for the following issues:

- An issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly.
- Graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites.
- An issue wherein Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts.
- A problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user.
- Issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers.
- The reliability of menu extras.
- An issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture.
- An issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server.
- Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing.
- A problem adding images to contacts in Address Book.
- An issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet.
- Safari plug-in reliability.
- General reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk.
- An issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account.

Other fixes include improved video playback, fixes for performance on certain Nvidia graphics cards and assorted security updates.

As always, the update can be snagged and installed via Mac OS X’s Software Update feature.

The update requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later to install and run.

Apple TV 3.0.1 Update Released, Fixes Disappearing Content Bug

Recently, Apple released version 3.0.1 of its Apple TV software. The new update prevents content from temporarily disappearing from the set-top box until it’s resynced. According to Apple’s release notes on the 3.0.1 update, Apple TV 3.0 users may notice that movies, TV shows, and songs appear to be missing from their device.

Per Macworld, users should restart their Apple TV by unplugging the power cord and plugging it back in. Then, they should select Settings->General from the main menu, followed by selecting Update Software. Select Download and Install when prompted by the Apple TV.

If the problem persists, Apple tells users to disconnect the Apple TV from their computers from Settings->Computers , and then reconnect the device again. If the users are still experiencing the problem, they should try a factory restore and an update to version 3.0.1 before re-syncing content from iTunes.
