The first items from Apple’s 12 Day giveaway

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 10.36.56 AMHopefully, many of you caught our article on Apple’s release of the 12 Days app in the US this year. The giveaway was kicked off the day after Christmas and, as the app’s name suggests, you’ll be able to download free things from Apple for 12 days. We have already entered day five with seven more days to go. If you are late to the party, you have missed the previous four days since the free items are only available for 24 hours.

I today’s gift is my favorite so far. The Day 5 gift is a downloadable copy of Hugo, the Martin Scorsese film about a young boy trying to unravel a secret. You can download either the HD or SD version of the film to iTunes or direct to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Just as if you had purchased it from the iTunes Store, the movie also comes with its iTunes Extras, which includes a ‘making of’ featurette. It’s interesting to note that when I simply opened iTunes on my Mac and went to Hugo in the iTunes Store, it said it was free there too. So it would seem that the 12 Days app tells you which app, music, movie, etc. is free, rather than being exclusively available through the app itself. In case you were wondering what you missed, here’s a list of all the gifts so far;

  • Day 1 – Justin Timberlake album from the iTunes Festival: London 2013. Includes two songs and two videos.
  • Day 2 – Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014 from the iBook Store.
  • Day 3 – Toca House, an education app for iPhone and iPad for children 2-6 that teach them about doing chores around the house.
  • Day 4 – Tiny Thief, a game for both iPhone and iPad containing puzzles that you have to lead your “tiny thief” character through. (A lot of fun)

Enjoy, and keep watching for each day’s gift!
