The Skinny on PlayStation2: It May be Worth the Wait

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) will start shipping PlayStation2 on March 4, 2000 in Japan, according to Asia Biz Tech. SCE wants the PlayStation2 to create a new type of entertainment experience, one that combines a movie and a game. The first generation PlayStation2 will be marketed as game machine and later models will include a more powerful microprocessor, communications equipment (cable modem) and an internal hard drive. It will also include a PC Card slot, USB and FireWire support that will enable the PlayStation2 to be connected to PC-related peripheral products.

Another reason to stall your PlayStation2 purchase is that there may not be many games released initially. SCE had to postpone the initial release of PlayStation2 from December because only 10 video game titles would be released by then. Then there’s the issue of product shortages due to the limited production capacity of the console. This is a frustration that Apple customers know well. Your best bet may be to wait a year for the enhanced models and content distribution services.
