Unboxing Apple's AirPort Express

Unboxing the APE!My much-anticipated Apple AirPort Express (APE) arrived yesterday at PowerPage world headquarters and I am absolutely thrilled with it so far. Setup was a snap requiring four simple screens in the the AirPort Express Assistant (which is installed in your Utilities folder) and, BAM, it’s online.
Keep in mind that the AirPort Express can only bridge from an AirPort Extreme and not the original graphite or snow ABS. The other thing I found interesting is that the Airport Express supports profiles. “These seem to be stored on the device itself and are accessible from the Airport Admin Utility” James Duncan Davidson writes in his BLOG.
Davidson also wishes that the APE would double as a 65 watt PB power supply!

Or even better yet, wouldn’t it be cool if every laptop power supply just happened to be a base station? I don’t know how possible it would be to squish a Airport Base Station into a 65W power supply, but it’d be damn cool. After all, a Powerbook power supply is US$79. The Airport Express is US$129. Hrmmm… Give it a year or so and it might just be feasible.

I say take it one step further and add a FireWire port too, so that it can charge an iPod 🙂
More great reading can be found on the AirPort Express support site and in the FAQ.
