Using Waves on Macintosh: Counter-Point

The recent story on the PowerPage states: “Sony Laptops to get edge over Apple’s” is quite misleading.

The recent story on the PowerPage states: “Sony Laptops to get edge over Apple’s” is quite misleading.
The fact that Sony is choosing to give away some software with their laptops doesn’t warrant the conclusion of the author. Waves software offers some of the preeminent plug in audio effects is absolutely true. First offered as plug in software for Digidesign’s Pro Tools, Waves has established themselves as leaders of this type of software. Pro Tools was a Mac only phenomenon for many years, as were the Waves plug ins.
Firmly established in the Macintosh community, Waves (and Digidesign) diversified onto the other platform. The fact that Sony recognizes good code doesn’t mean that they have gotten “an edge” over Apple PowerBooks. It means that Sony is bundling some nice effects with their product. They have to do this kind of thing… they don’t own the OS and can’t give away free apps like iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, etc.
