Dell Computer announced its new ultraportable model, the Latitude CS. At only 1.1″ thick and weighing in at 4.3 pounds, it includes a 13.3″ active matrix display and a 400 MHz Pentium II processor. An external module can plug into the side for a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or floppy drive. Prices start at US$2,899 for a system with Windows 98, a 4.5 GB hard drive, 64 MB memory and an external floppy. Dell has announced that when Intel’s 500 MHz Pentium III processor for portables is released, it will be incorporated into the Latitude CS series, maybe as soon as later this year. After similar ultraportable releases from Compaq, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba could Apple be far behind with its own ultralight offering?
