Who Needs DVD?

Forget all of the hoopla behind DVD because, believe it or not, something even better has come along. Japanese government researchers and Sharp engineers announced that they have developed a memory disk capable of storing 200 gigabytes of data, which is roughly 40 times more data than can be stored on a DVD-ROM. Here’s some details via ZDNN (“Super-disc towers over DVDs“):

The new technology makes it possible to store 40 movies eachtwo hours long on a single 12-inch (30.5 cm) disc, said NobufumiAtoda, chief scientist at the National Institute for AdvancedInterdisciplinary Research.

The research unit, part of the Science and TechnologyAgency, plans to work jointly with Sharp and three otherJapanese companies to produce prototypes of the new disc anddisc drive within two to three years, Atoda added.
