10.0.4: A Significant Update for PowerBook Users

Apple’s fifth official iteration of OS X, 10.0.4 is available now and in addition

Apple’s fifth official iteration of OS X, 10.0.4 is available now and in addition to various minor fixes to USB, Classic, and networking features, a couple of small fixes will warrant a download for iBook and PowerBook users.

Several sleep-related fixes have been added. Most importantly, the “iBook coma” appears to be fixed, according to early adopters, which caused difficulty with 2001 model iBooks when waking from sleep. In addition, according to Apple’s Tech Info Library (TIL) article 106360, 10.0.4 “Addresses a potential issue with certain PowerBook computers in which an undesirable sound may be heard while the computer is in sleep mode.” (The author has experienced this high-pitched whine emanating from his audio-out port on his TiBook and is much relieved!)

In addition, 10.0.4 apparently “enhances PowerBook battery power conservation when in sleep mode,” a problem also reported here on Go2Mac, though no improvements have yet been made to address reduced battery life while operating under X.

The upgrade also appears to address a wide variety of USB-related issues. 10.0.4 can be downloaded as either a 19.3 MB universal upgrade (for any version from 10.0.0 to 10.0.3), or a specific upgrade for 10.0.3 users which is only 12 MB.
