  • Foxconn claims chip shortage could extend into second half of 2022

Foxconn claims chip shortage could extend into second half of 2022

The chip shortage could extend well into the second half of 2022.

Per iPhone supplier Foxconn, the chip manufacturer is struggling to keep up with consumer demand. Apple has been dealing with the chip shortage for the past several quarters, but it only started significantly impacting Apple’s business in the most recent quarter. The shortage of specific components and production constraints related to the ongoing public health crisis have impacted ‌iPhone‌, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac availability. Apple said that this past quarter, the shortages cost it $6 billion, and it expects the impact to be even more significant for the holiday season.

Per Foxconn, which functions as Apple’s largest supplier for the iPhone, some reports have suggested that production is improving, but is still a length away from being entirely normal.

As the holiday season approaches, Apple is encouraging customers to get their holiday orders in early to ensure they receive them in time for the holidays, and the company has provided “order by” dates for some of its most popular products.

  • Rumor: Next-gen iPhone SE could feature 4.7-inch LCD, 5G, “A15” system-on-chip

    Rumor: Next-gen iPhone SE could feature 4.7-inch LCD, 5G, “A15” system-on-chip

It looks like the next-gen iPhone SE could see some improvements in horsepower.

Per sources along the supply chain, the upcoming iPhone SE could be powered by a next-gen “A15” system-on-chip as well as feature a design largely unchanged from its predecessor.

The model due out in early 2022 is expected to retain an iPhone 8 aesthetic, but will feature thoroughly modern components like an “A15” chip anticipated to debut with this year’s “iPhone 13” release in the fall. Cellular connectivity is predicted to receive a bump to 5G thanks to Qualcomm’s X60 modem, bringing the iPhone SE in line with iPhone 12.

Apple is thought to be retaining its traditional 4.7-inch LCD display as opposed to moving to the OLED screens found on its flagship iPhone models and the device could launch in the first half of 2022.

Per noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the “iPhone SE 3” could feature the aforementioned processor upgrade as well as be Apple’s “cheapest 5G iPhone model ever.”

According to sources quoted by Nikkei, 2022 could mark an end for Apple’s iPhone mini models:

“It is pretty much decided that there won’t be a Mini next year, and there will be a relatively cost-effective version of the largest iPhone Pro Max instead. However, the designs for the detailed specifications for the four new models next year are not yet locked in,” one person said.

The report cited low demand for the iPhone 12 mini, and instead of a new “mini,” Apple is rumored to be mulling an expansion on the top end with two 6.7-inch devices, sources said.

  • Analyst reiterates predictions of an iPhone SE with 5G capability and an updated processor in the first half of 2022

Analyst reiterates predictions of an iPhone SE with 5G capability and an updated processor in the first half of 2022

A new report released by ever-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Wednesday helped enforce expectations for the next-gen iPhone SE. Kuo stated that the upcoming handset could feature 5G and an upgraded processor, as well as arrive in the first half of 2022.

After 5G first arrived on Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup last fall, the iPhone SE gaining the next-generation cellular radio would be a big deal as it would be the company’s first entry-priced iPhone with the tech.

Kuo stated that the 2022 iPhone SE could feature a similar design as the existing 4.7-inch iPhone SE, the major change being a processor upgrade.

Kuo’s report also highlights optimism about the next iPhone SE’s “contribution to the 5G iPhone replacement demand.”
