Apple, with the release of Mac OS X 10.1.1, has begun to make a move towards switching to the lowest common denominator of file metadata: file extensions. Obviously, this has made a few Mac users upset, and is completely against everything that Apple’s OS has stood for. John Siracusa, a very skilled Mac user (evident in his Arstechnica articles on the Mac), has started a petition for Apple to continue using and improving metadata (He puts forth a very good argument here and explains metadata and the mac here). Sign it if you want to see improved metadata handling in OS X.
