  • Tired of using English on your Mac? Try Klingon!

Klingon_EmpireI ran across this tidbit on FairerPlatform, but I really should have already known this already (shame on me). Among the many languages your Mac can support and display, such as Latvian, Russian, and Swahili; believe it or not, it can also do Klingon, the well known warrior race from Star Trek. To use the Klingon language on your Mac, go to System Preferences > Language & Region and, under the “Preferred Languages” box, click the “+” (plus) button. Then scroll down, until you find “tlhlngan Hol” (Klingon). Then select it and click add. The Mac will ask if you want to use Klingon or English as the primary language. Before that, however, you’ll need to download the appropriate fonts to install on your computer. Just make sure you know how to actually read Klingon or know your way back to the language preferences first. If you want to learn Klingon, you can find a number of books on the subject on Amazon, and there are even Klingon dictionary apps for your iPhone on the App Store. FairerPlatform also found a link to a review for a Klingon keyboard, but apparently they were all recalled to the home planet of Qo’noS, because they can no longer be found anywhere (probably in part because it could only use a PS2 port). Don’t expect the PowerPage to go Klingon, at least not for another 250 years or so.

  • Adobe offers Photoshop Lightroom 4.3 as release candidate, includes Retina Display support, other fixes

    This could be nifty.

On Friday, Adobe sent version 4.3 of its Lightroom image editing software out as a candidate release via its Adobe Labs web site.

The new version, a 410 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:
    – Full support for HiDPI displays such as Retina Display units.

    – Unable to upload a large panorama to Adobe Revel via the Revel Publish Plugin.

    – Unable to add a second photo to a page layout in a Book. This only occurred when the “Show Unused Photos” filter is selected in the filmstrip.

    – A photo can be flagged as both a “Pick” and “Reject” at the same time when using the Toolbar to apply flags.

    – Using multiple fonts within the same text cell inside a Book can sometimes cause Lightroom to crash.

    – Exposure becomes the active adjustment slider in the Basic panel (within Develop) when moving from image to image.

    – Customers using Photoshop Elements 11 were unable to upgrade their catalogs in Lightroom 4.

    – Custom Cell padding options in the Book Module reset in between Lightroom sessions

    – 1080p video files shot on iPhone 4S flicker on replay.

    – Leaving the Book Module after using multiple text colors in the same text cell can sometimes cause the book to be lost.

The latest Photoshop Lightroom 4 also expands camera support to include the following:
    – Canon PowerShot S110

    – Canon PowerShot G15

    – Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

    – Casio Exilim EX-ZR1000

    – Casio Exilim EX-FC300S

    – Nikon D600 (expanded to full support)

    – Olympus PEN E-PL5

    – Olympus PEN E-PM2

    – Olympus STYLUS XZ-2 iHS

    – Panasonic DMC-GH3

    – Pentax K-5 II

    – Pentax K-5 IIs

    – Pentax Q10

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 was officially released earlier this year for OS X and PC. It’s available for purchase for US$149 for new customers, or US$79 for those upgrading from a previous version.

If you’ve tried the new build and have any feedback to offer, please let us know in the comments.

  • Adobe releases Lightroom 4.1, Camera Raw 7.1 updates

You can’t knock a decent update.

Per Electronista, Adobe is offering an official upgrade to Lightroom after an extended beta release in conjunction with an update to Camera Raw. Lightroom has been updated to version 4.1, addressing several bugs introduced in prior versions of the software, as well as introducing the ability to process HDR TIFF files. Camera Raw is now on version 7.1 and adds support for 28 more cameras and 24 new lenses. Both upgrades are available now from Adobe.com or the update mechanism in Lightroom 4.

Other bug fixes in Lightroom 4.1 include the following:

    – The ability to process HDR TIFF files. (16, 24 or 32-bit TIFF files).

    – Additional Color Fringing corrections to help address chromatic aberration.

    – Save photobooks created in the Book Module to JPEG.

    – Publishing photos to Adobe Revel is now accessible via a Publish plugin.

    – Additional camera support for several new cameras including the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Fujifilm X-Pro1, Nikon D800, and Olympus OM-D E-M5.

    – Corrections for issues introduced in previous versions of Lightroom.

One issue that remains is double-byte fonts such as Chinese or Japanese characters are still not being exported to PDF.

Bugs addressed in Camera Raw 7.1 include Windows keyboard shortcut fixes, increased stability in metadata editing, and point curve adjustments. A defringe control has been added to the Lens Correction panel. The DNG Converter 7.1 application duplicates this functionality for versions of Photoshop prior to CS6.

Lightroom 4.1 and Camera Raw 7.1 require an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to install and run.

If you’ve tried the new version of Lightroom, please let us know what you think in the comments.
