  • Tests demonstrate much-improved performance of iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3G handset

    For those of you hanging onto an iPhone 3G and hoping for something good to come out of the new iOS, there may be some good news in store.

    Per TiPb, a recent series of tests has shown that the iPhone 3G’s performance is much improved under iOS 4.2:



    According to the tests, entering text into Apple’s Notes app was acceptably snappy. Browsing the Web was also noticeably improved, especially scrolling and load times (over Wi-Fi). Some pinch-and-zoom was a bit laggy, but definitely worlds better than iOS 4.0 on a 3G.

    Apple was recently hit with a class action lawsuit from California iPhone 3G user Bianca Wofford, who claims that Apple “…knowingly and intentionally released what it called a system software ‘upgrade’ that, in fact, made hundreds of thousands of the Third Generation iPhones (sic) that were exclusively tethered to AT&T data plans ‘useless’ for their intended purpose.”

    iOS 4.2 is expected to be released this month with some media outlets citing the launch date as early as today.

  • Apple releases Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0, adds gesture support to some additional notebooks

    Apple on Tuesday issued an update to a number of recent notebooks, including the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, bringing inertial scrolling and three-finger drag gesture support to some trackpads.

    Per AppleInsider, the Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 was released Tuesday afternoon by Apple. The file is a 75.09MB update that requires Mac OS X 10.6.4 to install and run. In addition to adding inertial scrolling and three-finger drag in recent MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks, it also adds support for Apple’s newly released US$69 Magic Trackpad.

    Per Apple, the following MacBook and MacBook Pro models now have both inertial scrolling and three-finger drag gesture:

    MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009)
    MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009)
    MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009)
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)

    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2008)

    Inertial scrolling, but not the three-finger gesture, is offered in four additional models:

    MacBook Air
    MacBook Air (Mid 2009)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008)
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008)

    The new three-finger gesture was first discovered earlier Tuesday with hands-on tests of the Magic Trackpad. The capability allows users to quickly drag windows around. At the time, the feature was exclusive to the new hardware.

  • Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 2 to Developer Community

    Late Tuesday, Apple officially released iPhone OS 3.0 beta to to its developer community. According to Engadget, the new beta includes push notifications and in-app purchasing, giving developers a chance to play with these features. The report also cites significant stability improvements within the new build.
    While MMS and tethering are also included within beta 2, Apple has apparently asked developers not to try these features as of yet.
    Per the Apple Core, Apple has also made the following changes in beta 2:

  • B2 killed a lot of the typing lag, and scrolling problems.
  • Some speed improvements.
  • Some stereo bluetooth controls are working (play and pause). Others (rewind and fast forward) are not.
  • There’s a new Store option under Settings, but it’s empty.
  • New icon in the left side of the menu bar to indicate when call forwarding has been enabled.
  • Despite Apple’s warning against MMS and tethering, they can be enabled by modifying the ipcc file (the carrier settings). They both work in b2 in the U.S. although some countries have trouble getting them to work at the same time, but they work, regardless of the firmware.
  • The exchange email bug that prevented you from syncing to your corporate email was fixed.
  • New way to open a new page in Safari: Tap and hold on a link and a menu pops up allowing you to open, open in new page or copy the link (or cancel).

    • The iPhone OS beta 2 build can be downloaded from here upon signing up for an ADC account.
