  • Apple patent highlights future Face ID technique that could scan blood vessels in a user’s face, allow for more accurate identification

    As Apple’s Face ID continues to be developed, it’s been revealed that the company has explored the possibility of scanning the pattern of veins in a user’s face as another form of biometric authentication, one that could potentially tell identical twins apart.

    On Tuesday, the United States Patent and Trademark Office published a patent called “Vein imaging using detection of pulsed radiation,” granted to Apple. First applied for on November 12, 2015, the patent describes the use of an infrared emitter and a receiver that can detect blood vessel patterns below the surface of the skin.

  • Rumor: Next-gen Apple Watch may include glucose sensors, address diabetic market’s concerns

    The next-gen Apple Watch may feature glucose sensors.

    CNBC, citing sources close to the story, has reported that Apple has reportedly hired a team of biomedical engineers to develop noninvasive glucose sensors for integration in Apple Watch, a solution that could lead to continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels for users with diabetes.

    The small biomedical group is apparently part of a “super secret” initiative, first imagined by late cofounder Steve Jobs, to create a noninvasive glucose monitoring solution. The company is said to have been working on the project for five years now.

  • Rumor: Apple to release iOS 8.2 early next week, focus on Health-related, app improvements

    iOS 8.2 could come out as early as next Monday alongside Apple’s “Spring Forward” media event, which is slated to take place on March 9th at the Yerba Buena in downtown San Francisco.

    The update reportedly brings a number of improvements to the iPhone’s health app, along with the usual stability improvements and bug fixes.

    The GM released internally this week is said to be identified as build 12D508. The accompanying release notes mention the following improvements to the iOS 8 Health application:

  • DexCom device, app to work with Apple Watch upon launch, continuously monitor glucose levels for diabetics

    This is interesting.

    Medical company DexCom says that a glucose monitor made by the company that monitors blood sugar levels will be supported by the Apple Watch. The company is currently working on an app for the wearable that will be able to show blood sugar levels at a glance and can monitor them continuously.

    The app has apparently been under construction for some time and while the Food and Drug Administration is generally required to approve new medical hardware, a hands-off approach to the companion app has allowed developers to sink their teeth into its creation for the time being.

  • Suppliers hint at iWatch components, Apple’s interest in the wearable biometric device field

    There may be some more concrete proof as to an iWatch this October.

    Per Nikkei Asian Review, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, announced the company’s entry into health-monitoring services at the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on Thursday.

    Over at its Worldwide Developers Conference event, Apple said that this autumn bring to market an upgraded mobile operating system for smartphones and tablet devices. The new watch-like wearable gear will run on this OS, which will be equipped with a centralized function to manage users’ biometric information via smartphones. It is expected to hit the market in October.
