  • Rumor: Third-gen Apple Watch to arrive in LTE and non-LTE models

    KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research note and has predicted that the Apple Watch 3 will ship later this year with both LTE and non-LTE models offered. Kuo also expects the next Apple Watch will retain the same general design and not feature an obvious new form factor.

    Kuo added that the Apple Watch will probably continue to ship in 38mm and 42mm size configurations.

    The prediction comes 10 days after Bloomberg’s report that the Apple Watch may feature Intel modems for LTE connectivity.

  • T-Mobile snags $8 billion of wireless network spectrum for future infrastructure improvements

    It never hurts to prepare for the future.

    T-Mobile recently won an FCC wireless auction for a portion of the wireless airwave spectrum, thereby spending $8 billion to expand its network. The carrier acquired over 1,500 wireless licenses in the 600MHz range. Signals within the 600MHz can travel longer distance and are generally considered high quality—the kind of high quality that would put T-Mobile on par with AT&T and Verizon.

    Right now, the 600MHz spectrum is used by television broadcasters, and it won’t clear until early 2020 or so. The company says some of its new spectrum will be usable though, by T-Mobile as well as its subsidiary MetroPCS.

  • AT&T stops selling Samsung Galaxy Note 7 after reports of fires caused by replacement units

    Even after the recalls and apologies, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery debacle continues, even after supposedly safe replacement units were issued.

    This time, wireless carrier AT&T announces that it is discontinuing all sales and exchanges of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following a number of fires caused by supposedly “safe” phones that had been replaced under recall.

    “Based on recent reports, we’re no longer exchanging new Note 7s at this time, pending further investigation of these reported incidents,” said an AT&T spokesperson. “We still encourage customers with a recalled Note 7 to visit an AT&T location to exchange that device for another Samsung smartphone or other smartphone of their choice.”

  • Apple has yet to report iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus preorder numbers

    In what could be construed as a fairly prominent departure from years past, Apple apparently doesn’t plan to disclose first-weekend sales of its upcoming iPhone 7 handset.

    Apple has disclosed the figures for its new iPhones the past eight years. Last year, for example, Apple said it sold 13 million iPhone 6s and 6s Plus phones in their first three days of availability, up 30% from initial sales of the iPhone 6 models the prior year.

    Some analysts and investors have viewed the numbers as a gauge of enthusiasm for the new phones. Apple said the figures are less relevant than in the past.

  • Sprint, T-Mobile offer revamped data plans ahead of next-gen iPhone launch

    Say what you want about the open market, at least it spurs competition.

    Following Wednesday’s announcement as to changes to its mobile plans, wireless carriers T-Mobile and Sprint have announced new “unlimited” plans of their own.

    T-Mobile has replaced all its plans with a single one called T-Mobile One.

    The Mobile One plan apparent offers the following:

    It’s 100% unlimited and comes with unlimited talk and text and unlimited 4G LTE smartphone data – including unlimited standard definition video – all on America’s fastest 4G LTE network. And, it’s available at a great price: just $40 per line for a family of four.
