  • Rumor: 16-inch MacBook Pro to enter production in September, will feature Coffee Lake processor

The latest batch of 16-inch MacBook Pro rumors are in, with one analyst claiming that Apple may start manufacturing the notebook as a de facto replacement for the 15-inch MacBook Pro units.

In a note to investors over the weekend, IHS Markit analyst Jeff Lin said production of the as-yet-unannounced 16-inch MacBook Pro will begin in September with a target volume of 39,000 units per month.

Lin hinted that the 16-inch MacBook Pro could phase out Apple’s longstanding 15.4-inch model. Lin stated that “We think 15.4 [inch] MacBook volumes will shift to 16 [inch].”

The rumor was confirmed by an “OEM & panel supplier.”

“I am pretty sure that MacBook 15.4″ will be EOL [End-of-Life],” Lin said in a follow-up email.

According to Lin, the laptop will be powered by an unreleased refresh of Intel’s Coffee Lake-H mobile processor series. Apple currently relies on Coffee Lake-H silicon to power its 15-inch MacBook Pro lineup.

  • Rumor: Apple may be working on a next-gen iPad with folding screen, 5G networking

    This could be interesting.

As of the start of 2019, a slew of foldable screen products had hit the markets, albeit the Samsung Galaxy Fold was waylaid due to display durability issues noted by reviewers. This, in turn, indefinitely delayed the launch of the product.

The rumor mill, via a source at IHS Markit, currently has it that Apple is working not on a foldable smartphone, but a foldable iPad.

It’s not clear if the foldable iPad would be a bending single screen experience like the Samsung and Huawei phone prototypes, or if it would be closer to a notebook form factor with dual screens, with a display on each part of the case, presumably instead of a physical keyboard.

It’s thought that the product would feature MacBook sized screens, which seems plausible given that the current iPad Pro already tops out at as 12.9-inch screen size. This, in turn, could lead to a 13-inch or 15-inch screen.

The foldable iPad would also support 5G cellular radios for fast mobile internet browsing according to the analyst.

Granted, this is currently just a rumor from the supply chain, and it’s unknown as to when Apple might begin production, especially with 5G networking still in the works and the company not expected to deliver a 5G iPhone until late 2020.

Of course, this report is anything but concrete. Although it comes from a supply chain analyst, there doesn’t actually seem to be any evidence that Apple is ramping component production or anything like that at this stage.

  • Rumor: Next-gen iPhone to feature improvements to receiver, stereo sound, waterproofing

Amidst all the rumors, there’s got to be a nugget of truth in here somewhere.

Apple’s next-gen iPhone is said to feature an “enhanced receiver” with “further improvements” to stereo sound and waterproofing, according to new research shared this week by JPMorgan analysts, who track the company’s supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region.

As of now, the receiver is embedded in the slim, meshed earpiece cutout above the screen that the user holds against their ear during a phone call. Since the iPhone 7, it has doubled as a full-out speaker. With two speakers, Apple says the iPhone 7 delivers two times the audio output of an iPhone 6s with increased dynamic range.

  • Rumor: 10.5-inch iPad Pro to feature 2,224 x 1,668 pixels resolution at 264 PPI

Even if it’s a rumor, there’s generally some truth to it.

It’s been said that Apple’s rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro tablet will feature a higher resolution of 2,224 × 1,668 pixels, while maintaining the same pixel density as the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

The rumor hails from IHS Markit director of tablets and PCs Rhoda Alexander.

Alexander, in an interview with Forbes, stated that the upcoming tablet will have a resolution of 2,224 × 1,668 pixels with a 264 PPI, equal to the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro at 2,048×1,536.
