Rumor: Next-gen iPad may feature A19 chip, break away from trend of using previous-generation processors

The next-generation low-cost iPad may skip a processor generation and use Apple’s A19 chip.

Per Macworld, an “internal Apple code document” that leaked provided information about the company’s 2026 iPad lineup. According to prior documentation discovered by MacRumors it had been suggested that the ‌iPad‌ 12 would be equipped with an A18 chip, not an A19 chip. The A19 chip was just released this year in the iPhone 17, and it would be unusual for Apple to use a current-generation chip in the low-cost ‌iPad‌ due to cost.

Apple’s low-end iPad has not had a current-generation chip since the iPad 4, which came out when Apple was still crafting AX chips for its tablets. The ‌iPad‌ 5 that came out in 2017 used the A9 chip that was originally introduced in the 2015 iPhone 6s, and since then, the ‌iPad‌ has been equipped with an A-series chip that’s a generation or two behind the chip in the most recently released ‌iPhone‌.

The current iPad 11 model, which was released in March 2025, uses the A16 chip, which first debuted in the iPhone 14 in 2022. Subsequent iPad models have used chips from earlier iPhones as well.

The model numbers listed in Macworld’s report are also unusual. It says that J581 and J588 are the codenames for the upcoming 12th-generation ‌iPad‌, but codenames are typically sequential. Apple generally uses codenames to reference unreleased devices in its software.

In addition to the A19 leak report, the Macworld article suggests that the next-gen iPad Air will use an M4 chip, and that both the next-gen iPad and iPad Air will feature APple’s N1 networking chip. The N1 chip is an Apple-designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip that’s more energy efficient than chips designed by third-party companies.

Apple is expected to release the new ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad‌ models early in 2026.

  • Rumor: Apple developing 10.9-inch iPad Air, 12.9-inch iPad Air as part of larger iPad refresh for 2024

Rumor: Apple developing 10.9-inch iPad Air, 12.9-inch iPad Air as part of larger iPad refresh for 2024

Apple may be including a 12.9-inch iPad Air as part of an entirely refreshed iPad lineup coming next year.

According to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is looking to create a refreshed 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch ‌iPad Air‌ with new chips scheduled for mass production in the first quarter of 2024.

Kuo had previously stated that the all-new 12.9-inch iPad Air would feature an LCD screen that lacks the mini-LED technology of Apple’s current iPad Pro models, but will benefit from the same oxide backplane. This change would offer better display performance than the current 10.9-inch ‌iPad Air‌ which uses an a-Si backplane.

Apple is also rumored to be creating OLED iPad Pro models, and the company is thought to be developing a new 11-inch and 13-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ with a redesigned chassis and new M3 chip in the second quarter.

Kuo believes that last on Apple’s 2024 production roadmap is a new iPad mini and an 11th-generation ‌iPad‌, a new version of Apple’s most affordable tablet. This will see the discontinuation of Apple’s 9th-generation ‌iPad‌ currently still offered alongside the 10th-generation model in Apple’s lineup.

  • Rumor: Apple may limit Wi-Fi 6E feature to iPhone 15 Pro models

Rumor: Apple may limit Wi-Fi 6E feature to iPhone 15 Pro models

A report from a leaker named “Unknownz21,” who has a limited-but-reliable track record, has indicated that Apple may include the Wi-Fi 6E protocol and the A17 processor on its iPhone 15 Pro models.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus use the 2021 A15 processor, not the newer A16 processor. If Apple continues this trend, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will use the A16, and the A17 will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro lineup.

Wireless connectivity is tied to Apple’s processors. So, it seems likely that Wi-Fi 6E will be an A17 processor feature.

The Wi-Fi 6E protocol works with the same 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands that the Wi-Fi 6 protocol does, but also works over the 6GHz band. This allows for faster wireless speeds and less signal interference. To use the 6Ghz band, devices must be connected to a Wi-Fi 6E router.

Support for the Wi-Fi 6E protocol has already been introduced in a handful of Apple products, namely those with the M2 processor. These include the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini.

  • Rumor: 2020 iPhones to feature OLED screens, 5G connectivity

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s report released Monday speculated that Apple will launch its first 5G iPhones in 2020. The report also stated that all three 2020 iPhone models will feature OLED displays, and arrive in 6.7-inch, 5.4-inch, and 6.1-inch screen sizes.

The 6.1-inch OLED model is apparently the successor to the iPhone XR and will support LTE only. The new 6.7-inch and 5.4-inch phones would support 5G mobile data.

The report’s 5G timeline syncs with expectations in the rumor mill, while the size specifications seem on point as well.

It’s thought that the 5G compatibility in the 2020 iPhone would support the current leading standards, and function with both sub-6GHz and mmWave Technology. Millimeter wave spectrum is what is being deployed across the United States.

Kuo’s report indicated that Apple’s in-house 5G baseband chip won’t be ready until 2022, leaving the company dependent on Qualcomm baseband chips to connect to high-speed 5G cellular networks. Kuo also stated that Apple is designing its own power amplifier and RF antenna units.

It’s thought that the 2019 iPhone models will largely resemble the current iPhone XS and iPhone XR units in physical appearance. The 2019 flagship iPhones are believed to feature a triple-camera system, a faster A13 chip, indoor location improvements, AirPods power sharing, and larger internal batteries. The 2019 iPhone XR successor will be upgraded from a single to a dual-camera module.

Finally, Kuo stated that in spite of its departure from the modem business, the 2019 iPhone models will use Intel basebands. This is partly due to the fact that component suppliers for the upcoming handsets were more or less set in stone by the time of the Apple/Qualcomm settlement and when Intel broke the news as to its future plans for its modem business.
