Apple announces fifth-generation iPad Air, includes M1 processor, 5G connectivity, new array of available colors

Apple has announced its fifth-generation iPad Air, complete with an M1 processor, 5G connectivity, and a bevy of additional colors.

The fifth-gen iPad Air, released on Tuesday, offers an Apple Silicon M1 chipset, complete with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and Neural Engine cores. It also includes a USB-C port, plus a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera that supports Center Stage.

The new model offers 5G connectivity, which Apple states can reach “peak speeds of up to 3.5Gbps in ideal conditions.” The offers both eSIM and Wi-Fi 6 support, and as usual, it’s available in both cellular and non-cellular models.

Per the USB-C port, Apple has stated data transfers can reach up to 10 Gbps, and Apple has stated that the iPad Air can drive an external monitor up to 6K. The unit can also support a second-generation Apple Pencil.

The new iPad Air offers a 10.9-inch LCD Liquid Retina display, although it lacks the rumored mini LED backlighting which had been discussed prior to its release.

The updated iPad Air is available in a range of color options including Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, Purple, “and a stunning new blue.”

The fifth-generation iPad Air starts at $599 for the base model — the same price as its predecessor. It will be available to pre-order on Friday. March 11. It’ll ship out to customers on the following Friday, March 18.
