Apple Pay launched in Australia through American Express partnership

Apple Pay has just launched in Australia.

In a somewhat limited capacity, but it’s launched.

On Thursday, Apple, partnering with American Express, launched Apple Pay in Australia.

At present, no co-branded cards are currently supported, and only stores equipped for AmEx wireless payments are accepting transactions. This does include major chains though, among them Coles, Harvey Norman, Starbucks, Woolworths, and others.

Similar to the Canadian launch, Australia is typically better-equipped than the U.S. for wireless payments. Related technologies such as chip cards have been common in the region for some time.

The same AmEx deal should bring Apple Pay to Spain, Hong Kong, and Singapore sometime in 2016. Also due next year is support for more merchants, including Domino’s Pizza and Cinnabon.

While American Express isn’t that popular a credit card outside the United States, Apple Pay head Jennifer Bailey explained that the company both acts as a card issuer and payment network operator, which allows Apple to tap into their infrastructure for payments.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
