On Thursday, Apple released nine downloadable patches for Mac OS X. These updates address security holes, repair bugs in Apple’s Final Cut Pro digital editing program and adjust the system’s Daylight Savings Time tracking and are available through Mac OS X’s Software Update feature.
Holes found during the Month of Apple Bugs project undertaken by security researcher Kevin Finisterre and a hacker known as “LMH” were repaired via the Security Update 2007-002, a downloadable update for the Mac OS X 10.3 (“Panther”) and Mac OS X 10.4 (“Tiger”) operating systems as well as both PowerPC and Intel-based hardware.
The fixes provided in this update addressed a bug within Mac OS X 10.4 where a bug in the disk image loading system could lead to an application crash or “arbitrary code execution”.

For systems running both Mac OS X 10.3 and Mac OS X 10.4, the update resolved an error in the Bonjour networking system that could allow attackers on a local network to cause the iChat program to crash.
The update also addresses a vulnerability in iChat’s AIM URL handler that could lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution.
Apple also addressed a hole in Mac OS X’s UserNotificationsCenter process that could grant extended system prvilege to outside users.
Where Daylight Savings Time is concerned, Apple’s updated Java for Mac OS X provides added support for the revised Daylight Savings Time and time zone information which became effective on January 8th of this year (the changes match how Daylight Savings Time is observed in the United States and Canada and includes updated time zone information for the rest of the world). The fix also offers improved compatibility and reliability for the current Java standards under both Mac OS X 10.3 and Mac OS X 10.4.
Apple’s update to Final Cut Pro 5.1.3 “provides important bug fixes” and improves compatibiity of rendered files between PowerPC and Intel-based Macs as well as returns missing keyboard commands to the default keyboard layout. The update also repairs a bug found when placing cross-dissolves in a nested sequence containing still images.
The updates can be found online in Apple’s Software Updates> section or downloaded and installed via the Software Update program.
