Bah Humbug: Cingular Blocks Third Party Ringtones

It appears that U.S. cellular phone giant Cingular has begun blocking all third-party ringtones. This means that you can no longer send ringtones to your Cingular phone for free from cool web sites like cellphoneuser.com since Cingular began charging US$0.99 each for them some time this summer.

It appears that U.S. cellular phone giant Cingular has begun blocking all third-party ringtones. This means that you can no longer send ringtones to your Cingular phone for free from cool third-party web sites since Cingular began charging US$0.99 each for them some time this summer.

In the summer they offered free ringtones as bait to get you to register at their MyWirelessWindow.com Web portal site. But alas, no more. The only “fun & games” at the Cingular Web site is an updated terms and conditions page that allows you to pay US$0.99 for the privilege to rent a ringtone from them.

Phooey. A very scrooge-like move by the Mega-Conglomerate – just in time for the holidays!

Letting users download free ringtones draws attention to Cingular phones in public (“gee, how’d you do that?”) and drives sales of phone subscriptions! Don’t get me wrong, they should be able to charge for ringtones from their site, but blocking them from other sites is just plain greedy.

In order to help expedite a solution to this problem, please feel free to contact Cingular at (866) 246-4857 (or 661 for Cingular subscribers) or visit their Web site at www.cingular.com. Help us help you by voicing your opinion to Cingular and ask them to allow third-party ring tones. More on ringtones, if you would like to bone up.

Three free Holiday ringtones are available for a limited time. (Frosty the Snowman, Feliz Navidad, We Wish You a Merry Christmas) but hey, what about the thousands of other great ringtones available on the Web?
