Epic Games demos Unreal Engine 5, will bring development tools to macOS, iOS, among other platforms

The cool humans at Epic Games teased their upcoming Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) on Wednesday, offering a demo that promised super sharp and detailed gameplay on a variety of platforms.

Albeit the demo was performed on a PlayStation 5, the Unreal Engine 5 will be incorporated to games headed to the iOS and macOS as well.

Per the article on Verge:

The results showcase incredible visual quality, combined with the detail and photo-realistic lighting Epic promises its new tools will deliver. According to Kim Libreri, Epic’s chief technology officer, “the next-gen consoles are going to give consumers a quantum leap, and UE5 is another leap on top of that.”

UE5 also offers improvements with dynamic global illumination (Lumen) and truly virtualized geometry (Nanine). The Nanite tools automatically generates “as much geometric detail as the eye can see,” according to the company’s blog posts, and offers a new set of tools for game developers to use:

“Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes using Lumen, for example, changing the sun angle for time of day, turning on a flashlight, or blowing a hole in the ceiling, and indirect lighting will adapt accordingly,” the company explains.

Unreal Engine 5 is set to arrive in 2021 and will support the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as macOS, iOS, Windows PC, and Android.
