Contributing Editor Bob Snow writes about fax software and the new PowerBook G4 Titanium:
I read a recent TIL from Apple explaining that they do not provide support for the faxSTF software bundled with the PowerBook G4, suggesting that users contact Smith Micro. Since I use Global Village Fax software on all my Macs, I began to wonder if the GV software for the iMac and G3 would run on my wife’s new PowerBook G4. It is my understanding the there has been mixed success running this software on G4 desktops.
I ran the GV compatibility tester utility and it reported that the modem was supported. I installed GlobalFax 2.6.5 (for iMac/G3) and updated to 2.6.9 and all seems to be working fine. I only send faxes so I can’t vouch for receiving. Since GV was taken over by Boca and now Zoom, I am not sure about the future of any of their products, so an OS X update is highly unlikely.
Have you used Global Fax more extensively with the PowerBook G4? Are there other alternatives that you have used?
