FireWire Notes: Your Precious Driver CD

In testing the Ratoc and Newer FireWire cards, we’ve noticed that the driver CD which comes with your card is something you don’t want to lose. In fact, make a backup copy of it, because there’s a file on there that you can’t get anywhere online: the device-specific FireWire enabler. For the Ratoc, the file is called “REX-CBFW Enabler” and for the Newer it’s called “FireWire Enabler.” Is this some sort of copy-protection scheme, or some attempt to limit the redistribution of not-for-resale units? We don’t know. We do know that the lack of online downloads for the enabler file is a big pain.
