The site 99Mac.se has posted some side-by-side pictures of the new Hi-Rez 17-inch PowerBook compared to the old 17-inch PowerBook.
I know it’s difficult to tell from the pictures, but the new 17-inch Hi-Rez Book (that’s the name I’ve given it, maybe it’ll stick) appears to be brighter and obviously have more desktop real estate.
Even though the 1440 x 900 display is standard for 17-inch laptops it’s nice to see the WSXGA+ display (1680 x 1050) make its way to the Apple line. I always wondered why Apple didn’t put the higher resolution screens on their laptops.
Now if Apple were to update the 12-inch PowerBook with a 1280 x 800 wide-screen and backlit keyboard… I’m not holding my breath.

Do what I do and bind Zoom In & Zoom Out in the Keyboard & Mouse prefpane under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab to two unused Fkeys. I also find it convenient to check the “Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features” found in the Keyboard tab so you don’t always have to hold the the “fn” key.
It is a better screen. However, after seeing it it does put a strain on the eyes that the “low res” doesn’t/
I purchased one of these 17″ hi-rez powerbooks to replace my old 17″ powerbook. My old one was one of the 1st generations and is going to another family member. The only problem with the powerbooks is that once they go to a new resolution, you really can’t go backwards. If you select a lower resolution, you are stuck with fuzzy graphics and fonts.
The better real estate is good most of the time, but once in a while, it would be nice to have larger resolution on my older eyes. (guess I have to start wearing my glasses)
