iBook DVD Shipping Delay

I ordered my iBook (standard DVD configuration) from the Apple Store for Education on 9/29/01. Yesterday (Tuesday the 2nd) I recieved an email from Apple saying that my shipment has been “unexpectedly delayed” for 7-10 business days. I called today (the 3rd) to inquire as to the reason for the delay, and the Apple phone rep said he “didn’t know the reason for the delay” and couldn’t tell me why I had to wait.

The only possible conclusions I’ve come up with are as follows:

1. They’re selling lots of iBooks right now because of the free printer, free bag, and rebates on other electronic items (handspring visors, MP3 players).

2. They’re busy upgrading the machines to Mac OS 10.1, the machines with OS 10.1 haven’t arrived from Ireland yet (or wherever they’re made).

3. (way out on a limb here) There’s a new model in the pipeline.

Anyway, a two week wait for an iBook is too much. I’m considering paying the extra US$50 (and losing the free Apple bag) and just getting the things from CompUSA, which has them in stock. I just hope they have the 10.1 upgrade in stock as well.
