MacWhispers is reporting on what may be the largest monitor to come out of Cupertino in history:

Manufacturer sources have confirmed the existence of an Apple sponsored prototype high density LCD display, presently mocked up “to look like an Apple Cinema Display.”

Based around a 16:10 aspect ratio high-brightness panel at a whopping 3840×2400 pixels resolution, and a 22.2-inch screen size, the new display is said to be Apple’s upcoming top of the line product.

The supplier of the raw panel will be Chi Mei Opto Electronics, the same company now supplying Apple’s 20.1-inch LCD, and that will supply the upcoming 15.4-inch PowerBook panel. Given the wholesale-to-retail pricing levels of other Chi Mei panels now being supplied to Apple, we expect the new high resolution Cinema Display to fit at or under the previous Cinema HD’s US$3499 price point.
