Is TiVo Turning TeVil?

TeVilTiVo, the company known by its rabidly fanatical user base, made a couple of surprise announcements lately that suggest that the company may be turning evil.
First the company announced that it would limit the amount of time you can save pay-per-view and on-demand programs, kowtowing to copy-protection demands of Macrovision, then TiVo dropped the bomb that they will soon display billboards ads while you fast-forward through commericals (more on it here and here). Lovely.
I’m as big a fan as the next guy, but I’m starting to question the value of my US$13 per month (the US$300 “lifetime” plan is only good for the lifetime of your unit.) I may just build my own FreeVo out of a Mac or Linux box.
If you own a TiVo check out my friends at Weaknees.com who upgraded my hard drive. They rock!
