Mac mini Pr0n

mini-innerds.jpgSo you’re a fan of computer guts, eh? So am I. Macworld has posted some of the first nude pictures (pictured) of the new Intel-packing Mac mini.

We’ve got two large heat sinks (F) (one for processor, one presumably for video circuitry). There’s a little perch (G) at the back for the new “penthouse” on port row, belonging to the audio-in and -out ports. Just below the interconnect slot (H) is the built-in AirPort Extreme card (J) (you can see the antenna snake off to the right). At the front left you can make out the two RAM slots (K), one on top of the other. SODIMMs slide right into here, laying on their side. It’s a tight squeeze, but SODIMMS like to snuggle, so it’s okay.

Some things worth noting about the new mini: the video card (Intel GMA950) shares memory with the CPU, the Intel CPU chip is socketed (unlike the MacBook Pro and the iMac) meaning it might be able to be upgraded and the SO-DIMMS are very difficult to get at and subsequently upgrade.
In related news the Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66Ghz benchmarks OpenGL at over 2x faster than the Mac mini G4 it replaces.

I just ran XBench on my new stock standard Core Duo Mac Mini and uploaded the stats to XBench. The new model destroys the old one, and OpenGL performance is over 2x better than the G4 Mac Mini. Maybe the Intel GMA950 Is not so bad? 1080P trailers from trailers.apple.com run without dropping any frames also.
