Mac OS 9 Installer Doesn't Like Hacks (updated)

Update: It seems that many people are able to do a ‘dirty’ install over an old version of the Mac OS with the Enter-key hack, but you’ll need to reinstall the hack after you’ve updated your system. The original article is below.

If you’ve installed the hack that remaps the PowerBook Enter-Key into a Command-Key, you will have to do a clean-install of Mac OS 9 onto your hard disk instead of the usual ‘dirty’ install. It seems that the installer senses that you’ve modified the System file (which you have if you installed the hack) and won’t try to install OS 9 on top of it. It’s a minor nuisance, but you can just do a clean install, move your third-party extensions into the new System Folder, and redo the hack.
