Macworld Expo NY 2001 Announcements

Every year, at about this time Mac users get extremely excited. You can practically cut the tension in the air with a knife. This is also the time of year when we go out on a limb and prognosticate about what Steve Jobs will announce when he takes the stage to deliver the keynote at Macworld Expo New York 2001 on 18 July.

One source suggests that the new announcements will include:

  • US$899 iMac stays the same (these will sell thru until October/November)
  • then the US$1399 iMac drops to US$999 or so
  • new US$1399 14″ LCD iMac
  • new US$1799-1999 17″ LCD iMac

Other have suggested that Steve will announce TiBook2 in a darker color and with a DVD/CDRW combo drive and Son of Pismo, a PBG3 with a 14.1-inch LCD like its namesake in a thinner sleeker enclosure.

The bottom line is that some form of new iMac is imminent, sources indicate that Apple may even announce it before Expo at a press event at the end of June. What is your take on the summer announcements?

Michael Currie sends along this mockup of what the new flat-panel iMac might look like:

Attached are two pictures of an LCD iMac design using the Twentieth Anniversary Mac idea.

The Apple logo across the doors is clear plastic, incase your trying to work out what it is. The idea is that when the computer is on sleep and the doors are shut, a mute iTunes Visualizer starts and gives a lava lamp pattern effect through the logo. It also stops the computer looking ‘dead’ when not being used.

When open the speakers are flat panels inside the doors. The bottom center panel is the CD drive door, two headphone jacks are on the left side (shown), the main ports are on the right side, like the current iMac. This one uses a TiBook wide screen LCD, I’ll try different design now, using a traditional ratio LCD.
