Mobile Musician: Maxing out Max with Jitter

Max/MSP from Cycling `74 is already an absurdly powerful complete visual programming environment with unparalleled tools for creativing and processing live interactive music, audio, and visuals in realtime, and interfacing with various hardware. Now Cycling `74 has doubled the power of Max with a new set of objects called Jitter. I hesitate to put this in the Mobile Musician category, because while that remains Max’s key market, creative users in other fields will probably find uses for this software, too. I leave it to the folks at Cycling `74 to describe their latest software (and, take note, Max/MSP for OS X is coming but still no release date yet):

”Jitter is a set of 133 brilliant new video, matrix, and 3D graphics objects for the Max graphical programming environment. The Jitter objects extend the functionality of Max4/MSP2 with flexible means to generate and manipulate matrix data — any data that can be expressed in rows and columns, such as video and still images, 3D geometry, as well as text, spreadsheet data, particle systems, voxels, or audio. Jitter is useful to anyone interested in real-time video processing, custom effects, 2D/3D graphics, audio/visual interaction, data visualization, and analysis.

”Jitter will require Max/MSP 4.0.9 and work best with the free Max/MSP 4.1 update that was released today. If you already own Max/MSP, Jitter is US$395, and can be downloaded or sent to you on CD. If you don’t own Max/MSP, yet, there is a bundle package of Max/MSP + Jitter available for US$850, and can be downloaded or sent to you on CD. We also have special pricing for students and educational institutions.

”All three products, Max/MSP + Jitter can be downloaded and tried out for 30 days. As with our Max/MSP software, Jitter has extensive documentation including tutorials, and is only available in electronic format at this time. Jitter is available for Mac OS 9.X only. Max/MSP OSX in development currently. Jitter OSX to follow. No release date, yet. The same holds true for Windows versions.”
