PowerBook G3 Data Corruption Confirmed

A new Apple TIL article called PowerBook G3 Series: Data Corruption When Reading Audio CDs confirms earlier reports about corrupted files (see PowerBook G3 Corrupted Files from yesterday’s PowerPage).

We have received reports of problems with certain digital audio software (QuickTime Player, SoundJam MP, and MacAmp) on some PowerBook G3 models. The issue reportedly occurs when one program reads from an audio CD while another writes a file to the hard drive at the same time, which may cause the resulting file to be corrupted. This problem apparently does not affect the most recent PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) model or use of the AppleCD Audio Player. We’re in the process of investigating these reports to better understand the issue. In the meantime, users may want to avoid the issue by not using these applications to read audio CDs on these PowerBook models.
