DisplayMate mate offers overview of 9.7-inch iPad Pro screen, promises in-depth review in near future

For you display freaks out there, the mighty Dr. Ray Soneira will be reviewing the display on the just-announced 9.7-inch iPad Pro this week and has offered the following comments do far:

The new 9.7″ iPad Pro is a welcome return to Apple innovating again in displays. The wide DCI-P3 Color Gamut, with the TrueTone dynamic Ambient Light White Point correction, and the record low 1.8 percent screen Reflectance are all major innovations for Tablets and PCs, and presumably for iPhones in the near future. The 25% boost in brightness to 500 nits is much less important than lowering the screen Reflectance down to an impressively very low 1.8 percent – most other displays reflect 3 times as much ambient light, which reduces image contrast and color saturation.

Soneira also offered this about the new Night Shift mode on the tablet:

The Night Shift, which turns down the amount of blue light produced by the display, won’t significantly affect the production of melatonin enough to influence the circadian rhythm and improve the user’s night time sleep cycle. I’ve looked into this before and it’s more of a placebo effect. Turning blue way down is what’s needed, and people won’t want to look at a screen with a strong yellow color cast.

Soneira will be offering up an in-depth review of the new display on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, measuring the DCI-P3 Color Accuracy, the low Reflectance, and the White Point Shifts with ambient light in the process. Stay tuned and we’ll point you to the full review and technical breakdown the moment it becomes available.
