Recently-released Group FaceTime fix may prevent users from being added to calls already in progress

This could be another patch that needs to be released. According to a number of user reports, Apple’s Group FaceTime patch, which was released as an update to macOS 12.1.4 Mojave last week, may only be partially successful, as a new issue seems to have arisen in which users are unable to add additional contacts to a call already in progress.

It has been found that, while users can commence both standard two-person FaceTime calls and Group FaceTime calls of three or more people, in some cases it is not possible to switch from a FaceTime call to a Group FaceTime version. In some cases, the option to “Add Person” is not available during a FaceTime call, preventing the addition of more participants to a call.

Affected users can still initiate a Group FaceTime call with multiple other contacts, but shifting from a one-to-one call to one with more than three people taking part is seemingly failing.

Apple has apparently confirmed this via a support email, indicating that this is a known issue. There is, at present, no released timescale for a fix, and posts from Apple’s Twitter-based support also mention the limitation switching between FaceTime and the Group version.

The current issue doesn’t directly prevent Group FaceTime being used, and remains less severe than the initial exploit, so it’s probable that Apple will fix this, albeit at a less urgent speed. It’s also possible that this fix could be part of iOS 12.2 and macOS 10.14.4 Mojave, both of which are in the beta testing process.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
