Review: Waterfield Designs 17-Inch Racer-X Bag

Waterfield Designs Racer-X 17-InchOne of my all time favorite PowerBook luggage manufacturers is Waterfield Designs. They make the type of bags that just reek of quality. You can tell that their bag is going to be solid from the moment you hold it in your hand.
Attention to detail is important at Waterfield Designs and you can tell. Everything from zippers to hardware to handles are super tight, functional and seemlessly integrated with the rest of the bag. The 17-Inch Racer-X is the perfect fit for the Aircraft Carrier ‘Book leaving just enough room for your accessories and some reading materials…

Waterfield has made five changes to the 17-Inch Racer-X over the 15-inch model I had been using previously.

  1. Double zipper sliders so you can open and close the compartments from either end, or in the middle.
  2. They added a half-inch to the depth so you can fit slightly chunkier items in the front pocket without making the front of the bag look like it has a pot belly.
  3. They are now using a stiffer foam in the front panel to reduce the same pot belly effect.
  4. They’ve added to side strap/tabs to clip on an iPod or cell phone.
  5. They’ve also added a bottom trap door locking zipper to the rear pocket so you can mount the Racer-X onto a wheelie suitcase for your jaunts through airports.

Excellent upgrades all around and definitely worth the (inexpensive) US$139 price of admission.
Waterfield Designs ZipGrip1But forget all that for a second. My new favorite bag is a Waterfield Camera Case (US$26-37 depending on size). If you are like me, you bring a ton of perifs along in your PB bag. Well, the Waterfield Camera Case is a must-have accessory if you own a digital camera. I grabbed one of the ZipGrip in size 1 and it fits my Canon Digital Elph perfectly! Excellent. As an added bonus, the ZipGrip 1 also fits the new Canon iSight Web cam almost perfectly with FireWire cable and mount. Run, don’t walk to get a couple of their cool bags.
