Rumor: Apple to incorporate thinner, higher capacity batteries into upcoming iPhone 6 models

The next-gen iPhone’s battery could last that much longer.

Per Chinese web site IT168, Apple may be incorporating a 1,000 mAh battery in its upcoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model and a 2,500 mAh battery in the 5.5-inch model.

The end result could be a battery with a larger capacity, an increase of 60 percent from the iPhone 5s to the new battery for the rumored 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

Still, even with the larger battery, competitors Samsung and Motorola currently offer a 2,800 mAh battery inside the Samsung Galaxy S5 (which features a 5.1-inch display) while the Motorola Moto X boasts a 2,200 mAh batter (which features a 4.7-inch display).

One reason Apple might consider such a move would be as part of a strategy to slim down the next-generation devices, as larger-capacity batteries bring with them a corresponding increase in size — the Galaxy S5, despite a larger frame in which to place the battery, is still thicker than the iPhone 5s. The Cupertino company could also have designed a much more power-efficient architecture, thanks to their impressive vertical integration, that would allow runtime to remain the same despite the lessened power reserve.
