Rumor: iPhone 12 could feature sensor-shift feature to help stabilize images in event of excessive movement

From the depths of Rumorville and comes the rumor that Apple’s next-gen iPhone, or the “iPhone 12,” will feature sensor-shift stabilization, would you allow the actual camera sensor – and not just the lens – to move within the phone case to keep an image steady. The next-gen iPhone is thought to be on track for release in September 2020.

The unconfirmed rumor has detailed a system in which the sensor-shift stabilization system would be capable of detecting excessive motion, and then move the camera sensor to compensate for the movement.

Sensor stabilization has the benefit that it can work with any of the lenses on the iPhone, including any external ones that you add.

Another rumored alternative to this is lens stabilization, wherein a similar motion-section makes the lens adjust to match. This is generally more effective than sensor stabilization, but it can require special lenses. Since the iPhone X and iPhone 8, iPhones have included a form of optical image stabilization that does move the lens in response to movement.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
