Rumor: Next-gen Apple Watch could include cellular functionality

While it’s been estimated that the Apple Watch has sold 12 million units within the device’s launch year, it’s hard to know exactly how many have gone out the door or what’s in store for the next generation.

Either way, a new rumor has it that that Apple Watch 2 will include cellular connectivity and a beefier processor so apps will load more quickly. That might mean yet another data plan to pay for, but the watch would function on its own instead of being tethered to an iPhone.

Other features that would make the Apple Watch 2 more compelling would include GPS and a longer battery life as well as additional health-companion aspects.

As of now, Apple is pushing its developer community to build better apps for the Apple Watch. This has been done by mandating all new watch apps submitted to the App Store be built for watchOS 2 and run natively on the device. That should make it easier and faster to use watch apps.

So, that’s what’s on the table at the moment.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
