SkinTight Armband for iPod miniThe SkinTight Mini Arm Band (US$29.95) from Speck Products keeps your iPod safe and secure and is great for working out. When it came out in January I panned the iPod mini as too expensive for its small 4GB capacity. Since using a mini with the SkinTight Mini Armband I am a total mini convert.
The SkinTight is a rubberized skin for the iPod that protects it in a layer of shock-absorbing, tear-resistant KRATON plastic, see my previous review here. Speck has expanded on a good idea by adding an armband to their SkinTight that secures the iPod mini to your arm for working out, jogging, biking etc. I found that I prefer to mount my mini upside-down because it is easier to read the display. Also handy are the small cable clips to help wrap excess headphone cable around the armband.
The light 3.6 ounce mini is almost half the weight of the heavier 5.6 ounce white iPod making it much more practical for working out with. Sure, you’ve got to rotate out your music a little more often, but that hasn’t bothered me so far. The problem with my full-size iPod (with belt clip) is that it tends to dangle off my waist band too much while working out.
The one thing I wish the Skin Tight had is a screen cover. I’ve already scratched my mini’s display just by carrying it in the same pouch as the headphones. This is easily accomplished with a clear plastic screen overlay like the one found in the iSkin. My only other nit is that you cannot connect a Griffin iTrip mini while using the SkinTight, an issue that the company is looking into.
I like the SkinTight’s protection and good looks. Combining their new armband and the SkinTight rubberized skin provide you with the freedom to run, bike, or workout with your iPod mini. The SkinTight mini is available for US$19.95 each (three for US$29.95) in five colors (clear is shown).
