Stop Cyber-Terrorism. Buy a Mac.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the House Science Panel has been debating what efforts the government should make to prevent terrorist computer hacking attempts. Among the comments described in this Wired News story about it, Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-Michigan) chimed in with a lovely spot of wisdom: “I own a Macintosh. I got through Y2K — I didn’t even think about it. And I’ve never had any problems with viruses. Maybe there’s a lesson to be learned.” It may sound silly, but there is a good point within the flippant remark. It’s a lot easier to attack an information infrastructure when 90% of the computers are running the same software.
