  • Apple to begin implementing PQ3 security protocol in upcoming versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS

Apple to begin implementing PQ3 security protocol in upcoming versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS

Your iMessage messages could be on the verge of becoming substantially more secure.

Apple on Wednesday announced a new post-quantum cryptographic protocol for iMessage called “PQ3.” The company stated that this “groundbreaking” and “state-of-the-art” protocol provides “extensive defenses against even highly sophisticated quantum attacks,” as seen in their public release:

Today we are announcing the most significant cryptographic security upgrade in iMessage history with the introduction of PQ3, a groundbreaking post-quantum cryptographic protocol that advances the state of the art of end-to-end secure messaging. With compromise-resilient encryption and extensive defenses against even highly sophisticated quantum attacks, PQ3 is the first messaging protocol to reach what we call Level 3 security — providing protocol protections that surpass those in all other widely deployed messaging apps. To our knowledge, PQ3 has the strongest security properties of any at-scale messaging protocol in the world.

The PQ3 protocol will be gradually rolled out in iMessage starting in iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, macOS 14.4, and watchOS 10.4 beginning in March, and has already been incorporated into the latest beta versions of these operating systems. visionOS will not support the PQ3 protocol during the initial rollout, the company confirmed.

Apple stated that PQ3 will fully replace iMessage’s existing cryptography protocol within all supported conversations later this year. All devices in an iMessage conversation must be updated to the above software versions or later to be eligible.

iMessage already supports end-to-end encryption, but current cryptographic protocols that are commonly used by messaging apps could potentially be solved by future quantum computers.

Comparatively, the PQ3 protocol is designed to protect users against “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” attacks, in which malicious actors collect large amounts of encrypted data now and store it in hopes they will be able to decrypt it with a quantum computer in the future:

Apple says PQ3 achieves what it calls “Level 3” security, meaning it secures “both the initial key establishment and the ongoing message exchange,” and has published further details in its security documentation.

“Sid Meier’s Railroads!” to arrive for Mac, iOS, and iPadOS devices in April, now available for preorder

    This could definitely be fun.

Publisher Feral Interactive has announced that the company is bringing “Sid Meier’s Railroads!” to Apple’s App Store in April, and that the game is available for preorder now.

The game will arrive on April 15 and will be available for $12.99. Players can create a transport network in locations across America and Europe with 40 famous train engines from the early 19th century to the present day.

Throughout the game, players will be able to compete with infamous railroad barons such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan to manage trains, cargo, passengers, and more in the railway management simulator.

The game also features 16 historical and fictional scenarios, each with its own map and unique objectives. For example, players can establish the first passenger line in 1830s Great Britain, connect the American West during the Gold Rush, or help Santa with the Christmas rush at the North Pole.

A Train Table Mode also allows for gameplay with no competition, time limits, or financial constraints, players can create railroads in a relaxed environment.

Firaxis Games originally released Sid Meier’s Railroads! in 2006 for Windows as a sequel to Railroad Tycoon 3. Later, Feral Interactive created a version for Mac OS X in 2012.

Sid Meier’s Railroads! will be available on iPhone 6S and later, any iPhone SE and the 2019 iPod touch. For iPads, it supports the 2019 models for iPad mini and iPad Air and later, the 2017 iPad and later, and any iPad Pro.

The game also requires iOS/iPadOS 15.5 or later to install and run on an iPhone or iPad. Mac users can purchase the game for $9.99 and play it through Steam for machines running macOS Mojave 10.4 or later.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

    dropboxlogo

You’re going to have to update your operating system to Mac OS X 10.6 or later to keep using Dropbox.

Per 9to5Mac, Dropbox has announced through an email to users on older versions of OS X that it will soon be discontinuing support for computers running Leopard or other older versions of the operating system. Users still running anything older than OS X 10.6 will need to upgrade in order to continue using future versions of the Dropbox app.

Users who don’t upgrade will still be able to use the web-based Dropbox manager, but will be automatically signed out of the Mac app. From that point forward, they will not be able to login back into the Mac client until they are on a newer version of OS X.

  • Shellshock fix posted for Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.6.8 operating systems

    unixterminal

This suggestion came in over the weekend from one Larry Macy, Ph.D over at the University of Pennsylvania and it’s pretty interesting.

For those of you still running Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.6.8, a workaround has been discovered for the recently discovered Shellshock bash vulnerabilities. Per Macy, the process replaces bash and sh with a new version of bash.
