  • Civilization VII Arcade Edition to arrive for Apple Arcade in February, albeit with caveats

Civilization VII Arcade Edition to arrive for Apple Arcade in February, albeit with caveats

If you love Civilization, it’s en route to Apple Arcade, albeit with some caveats.

Per AppleInsider, Civilization VII Arcade Edition is coming to Apple Arcade on February 5, bringing the long-running strategy series to additional Apple platforms, but with some limitations.

The game will be available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac through an Apple Arcade subscription, without ads or in-app purchases. For Apple users, that removes the usual upfront cost tied to a franchise long sold as a premium PC release.

The game will offer the classic turn-based strategy experience, wherein players guide their civilizations through distinct historical ages through long-term choices. Unfortunately, the Arcade version will be somewhat limited and won’t receive downloadable content released for Civilization VII on other platforms. Per the App Store listing, both post-launch DLC available on Steam and other platforms and other updates to the title may arrive later or not at all.

The game will be available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac through an Apple Arcade subscription.

The absence of DLC ties in to how Apple Arcade itself works, as the service doesn’t support paid expansions or in-app purchases, which clashes with Civilization’s long-established expansion-driven model.

Finally, multiplayer functionality over a network may be limited to Apple Arcade subscribers as well.

Civilization VII Arcade Edition launches on Apple Arcade on February 5 and will require iOS or iPadOS 17 or later on devices with an A17 Pro or M-series chip, including recent iPhone, iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models, along with macOS Monterey 12.1 or later on Apple silicon Macs. The download size is 3.53 GB, with Apple Vision support requiring visionOS 26 or later.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • OneDrive Mac users complain about updated version, errors accessing local copies of synced files

OneDrive Mac users complain about updated version, errors accessing local copies of synced files

This could qualify as something of a mess.

Following up on a series of changes as to how OneDrive syncs files and folders to the Mac, a number of users have reported errors about the cloud storage service, following Microsoft’s rollout last month of a new “Files On-Demand Experience” for Macs running macOS 12.1 and later.

In a change coming with macOS 12.3, currently still in beta, Apple is deprecating the kernel extensions originally used by OneDrive’s syncing features, so the Mac client is now using Apple’s File Provider extensions instead. Microsoft says this new technology stack should make the feature “much better integrated with the operating system compared to the first version.”

This doesn’t seem to be the case among users, who’ve reported a variety of bugs and slowdowns.

To make things worse, Microsoft has also made the new Files On-Demand feature the default behavior of its OneDrive client. The Files On-Demand feature is designed to allow users to access files in the cloud without having to download them and use storage space on their Mac. This had previously been an optional feature that users could disable. Instead, the latest update has controversially removed the original user setting to disable it, further angering customers who now have no way of keeping local copies of their synced files.

In short, the practice has removed local copies of files synced to OneDrive from their Mac since the update was released.

Responding to the change, one customer offered the following:

“What is going on? Why would you enforce Files On-Demand on your customers, isn’t it enough to enable it by default? My 70GB of cloud data is not local anymore, sometimes I have no internet, you are locking me away from my files. Also making it impossible for me to do full text searches. Files On-Demand is also too slow, waiting a second to display folder contents is too much when you organize things in deep folder structures.

How I can disable Files On-Demand? Will you please stop knowing the best for your customers? We aren’t toddlers. Thanks!

If Files On-Demand is enforced by policy, I will leave your cloud service once and for all.”

    Another user offered the following:

“You could have asked instead of just deleting everything so I have to download all of my files again. So angry at Microsoft over this. Returning my files to local has been a gigantic pain in the rear end. I have far better things to do than to painstakingly select each folder and choose ‘always keep on this device.’”

Microsoft includes an ability in OneDrive’s Finder integration to mark synced files as “Always Keep on This Device” (internally referred to as “pinning”), and some users have resorted to exhaustively re-downloading all their files and folders using this option, but not without a high degree of syncing fails.

Other users have reported experiencing issues with files refusing to download or open correctly in their default applications, as noted by one Redditor:

“Prior to today, when I double clicked a Word document, PPT, etc. in the Finder that resided in my OneDrive folder, the Office app would open the OneDrive version and autosave my changes. Today, when I do that, it just treats it as a local file and won’t sync it with OneDrive. I still have the setting ‘Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open’ enabled, but the new version seems to have broken that.”

If you’ve seen this issue on your end, please let us know about your experience and what you did to resolve it in the comments.

  • macOS 12.1 update expected to resolve notch/menu bar extras issue on 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks

macOS 12.1 update expected to resolve notch/menu bar extras issue on 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks

Apple’s much-anticipated macOS Monterey 12.1 update could also resolve the issue with the notch obscuring “menu bar extras” on the 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks.

The update has entered Release Candidate stage and could be available by as early as next week.

“Menu bar extras” are the tiny icons that appear on the right side of the menu bar, providing users with convenient access to app-specific controls. These icons could become overlapped by the notch on the new MacBook Pro models, causing the icons to be hidden or only partially visible, but Apple said this bug has been fixed in macOS 12.1.

For developers updating their apps to play nice with the notch, users can enable a “scale to fit below built-in camera” setting for the app to adjust the active area of the MacBook Pro’s display, ensuring that the app’s menus appear below the notch and are always visible.

The changes come after multiple users complained about the notch interfering with menu bar items on the new MacBook Pro notebooks.

The macOS Monterey 12.1 update is also expected to resolve other issues, such as the Tap to Click bug, HDR video playback on YouTube, and MagSafe charging:

This release also includes bug fixes for your Mac:

    – Desktop and Screen Saver may appear blank after selecting photos from the Photos library
    – Trackpad could become unresponsive to taps or clicks
    – External displays may not charge some MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers when connected using Thunderbolt or USB-C
    – HDR video playback on YouTube.com could cause 2021 MacBook Pro computers to panic
    – Menu bar extras may be obscured by the camera housing on 2021 MacBook Pro computers
    – MagSafe may stop charging on 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro computers when lid is closed and system is shut down
